Job Title: Linux/UNIX Administrator
Experience Range: 8-12 yrs
Location: Bengaluru
Technical Skills:
- Linux administration experience across enterprise distributions (e.g., RHEL, CentOS/AlmaLinux/Rocky, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian)
- UNIX administration exposure (e.g., Solaris, AIX, HP-UX) as required by the setting
- Core services administration: SSH, DNS client configuration, NTP/chrony, cron, logging, package management, file sharing (NFS/Samba), directory services (LDAP/NIS), and clustering (where applicable)
- User and access management: local users/groups, sudo, privileged access workflows, service accounts, and password vault practices
- Monitoring and troubleshooting: performance, capacity, and alert triage across CPU, memory, storage, and network
- Patching and vulnerability remediation: applying OS updates, hotfixes, and rollback planning within defined maintenance windows
- Virtualization and imaging: working with virtual machine templates and provisioning processes (platform-specific)
- Server hardware basics: disk/RAID concepts, adding/removing storage, and coordination for break/fix with OEM or data center teams
The Linux/UNIX Administrator is responsible for the availability, performance, and security of Linux/UNIX server environments across physical and virtual platforms. This role performs proactive monitoring, incident response, patching, and operational improvements while ensuring compliance with internal standards and documented processes.
- Operations & Monitoring: Perform regular health checks; monitor alerts; track capacity and resource utilization; and provide proactive recommendations to improve stability and performance.
- Incident, Problem & Change Management: Troubleshoot incidents, coordinate restoration, document findings, perform log analysis,
contribute to root cause analysis (RCA), and escalate appropriately per defined SLAs and procedures.
- Platform Services: Administer and support server services such as SSH, NTP/chrony, cron, logging, file sharing (NFS/Samba), directory services (LDAP/NIS), and clustering components as applicable.
- Patching, Hardening & Vulnerability Remediation: Install, test, and deploy OS patches, updates, and hotfixes; plan and execute rollback when needed; and remediate vulnerabilities within required timelines.
- Server Build & Provisioning: Support server build activities (physical/virtual), image validation, repository/package configuration, and checklist-based acceptance for new and rebuilt servers.
- Access Management: Manage user/group lifecycle, sudo access, service accounts, and permissions for directories and file shares in line with least-privilege and password vault processes.
- Backup & Recovery Support: Monitor and triage backup failures and OS image issues; coordinate with backup teams/tools for successful recoverability (as per scope).
- Virtualization: Manage VM templates and deploy virtual machines from approved templates; support standard power operations (shutdown, startup, reboot) and troubleshooting.
- Hardware & Storage Support: Assist with disk expansion/reduction, RAID configuration coordination, and basic hardware triage (e.g., disk/CPU/memory alerts) in partnership with data center/OEM teams.
- Documentation & CMDB: Maintain operational documentation (runbooks, SOPs, checklists) and ensure configuration items are accurate in the CMDB/CMS; document approved exceptions to standards.
- Automation & Continuous Improvement: Maintain and improve automation scripts/tools used to reduce manual effort and improve operational quality; update schedules, parameters, and definitions for automation tools.
