Solution Architect — Job Description
Role purpose
Design and assure end-to-end technology solutions that meet business outcomes and non-functional requirements (security, resilience, performance), and align with enterprise standards. Act as the bridge between business stakeholders and delivery teams to turn requirements into implementable architecture.
Key responsibilities
- Lead discovery to clarify scope, assumptions, constraints, dependencies, and NFRs.
- Define solution options and recommend an approach with transparent trade-offs (cost, time, risk, complexity).
- Produce and maintain solution architecture across applications, integrations, data, and infrastructure.
- Ensure alignment to enterprise architecture principles, reference architectures, and technology standards.
- Embed security-by-design, privacy, and control requirements; support risk and governance approvals.
- Collaborate with engineers, product owners, and vendors to translate architecture into epics/stories and delivery increments.
- Provide architecture assurance during build (design reviews, pattern guidance, resolving technical blockers).
- Drive operational readiness: monitoring, logging, support model, DR/BCP, and go-live criteria.
Key deliverables
- Solution Architecture Document (SAD) and/or High-Level Design (HLD)
- Integration design: API contracts, interface specs, sequence diagrams, error handling patterns
- Data design artefacts: conceptual/logical data model, data flows, lineage, retention considerations
- Non-functional requirements pack: availability, performance, scalability, security, observability, resilience
- Deployment architecture:
cloud/onprem/hybrid topology, network zones, CI/CD approach, IaC outline
- Security artefacts: threat model, IAM approach, encryption/key management approach, security controls mapping
- Architecture Decision Records (ADRs) and risk/issue/decision logs
- Operational readiness pack: monitoring/alerting, runbooks, support handover, DR plan and test approach
- Estimates and roadmap inputs: high-level sizing, cost model, migration approach (if applicable)
Key skills
Architecture & design
- End-to-end solution design across application, integration, data, and infrastructure layers
- Strong grasp of patterns: microservices, event-driven architecture, API-first, integration patterns
- Ability to define and validate NFRs and translate them into design choices Cloud & platforms
- Hands-on architecture experience with AWS/Azure/GCP (at least one)
- CI/CD concepts and environment strategy (dev/test/stage/prod), Infrastructure as Code
Security & resilience
- Threat modelling and risk-based decision-making
- Producing solution design documents and mandatory artefacts.
- API design (REST/gRPC), exposure to SaaS solutions, and AI governance are essential.
- Data modelling fundamentals, data quality and governance awareness Delivery & stakeholder management
- Strong communication: can explain complex designs to engineers and senior stakeholders
- Experience working in Agile delivery, influencing without authority, and managing cross-team dependencies
- Pragmatic decision-making: balancing “right” architecture with delivery pace (“perfect is the enemy of shipped”)
