1. Qualification: As per National Medical Commission (NMC) norms for Professor and Head of Department:

- MD / DNB
- Senior Professor with requisite teaching and administrative experience
- Valid medical registration with appropriate medical council

1. Experience:

- Experience as prescribed by NMC for the post of Professor
- Minimum required experience as Professor with demonstrated leadership, academic, and administrative capabilities

- Dean / Principal Medical College for Academic matters
- Medical Superintendent - Clinical and hospital operations

- Departmental Faculty
- RLJH Quality Cell

Job Description:

The Head of Department (HOD), is responsible for providing overall leadership, direction, and governance to the Department. The role encompasses clinical excellence, academic leadership, administrative oversight, research promotion, and compliance with organisational standards in alignment with NMC regulations and the policies of the Medical College and Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital affiliated to a Deemed-to-be University.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

A. Clinical Leadership

- Overall responsibility for planning, delivery, and monitoring of clinical services in the Department of General Medicine.
- Ensure safe, ethical, evidence-based,



and high-quality patient care in compliance with standards and hospital policies.
- Develop, implement, and periodically review departmental clinical protocols, SOPs, and care pathways.
- Oversee emergency services, inpatient wards, ICU coordination, and specialty clinics under General Medicine.
- Monitor clinical outcomes, mortality and morbidity data, and patient safety indicators.

B. Academic and Teaching Leadership

- Plan, organize, and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs as per university curriculum and NMC norms.
- Ensure effective conduct of lectures, bedside teaching, seminars, journal clubs, and academic discussions.
- Conduct and monitor departmental academic meetings, teaching schedules, and internal assessments.
- Mentor faculty members and postgraduate students in academics, research, and professional development.

C. Administrative Responsibilities

- Exercise overall administrative control of the Department of General Medicine.
- Prepare and approve duty rosters, academic schedules, and leave plans to ensure uninterrupted clinical and academic services.
- Coordinate with hospital administration for manpower planning, equipment procurement, and infrastructure requirements.




- Represent the department in institutional committees, statutory bodies, and hospital meetings as nominated.

D. Research and Academic Development

- Promote and oversee departmental research activities in accordance with institutional research policy.
- Ensure ethical conduct of research and compliance with Institutional Ethics Committee guidelines.
- Encourage publications in indexed journals and participation in research projects.
- Facilitate and support CMEs, workshops, conferences, and academic programs conducted by the department.

E. Quality Management Responsibilities

- Function as the Departmental Lead for Patient Care Standards by collaborating with Quality Link Doctor.
- Ensure effective implementation and monitoring of Patient care standards related to:
- Patient rights and patient education
- Documentation and medical records management
- Infection prevention and control practices
- Clinical audits, indicators, and quality improvement initiatives

- Participate actively in internal audits, gap analysis, and corrective and preventive action planning.

F. Governance and Skilled Conduct

- Ensure professional discipline, ethical conduct, and adherence to institutional policies within the department.
- Address patient complaints and grievances in coordination with the hospital grievance redressal mechanism.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient information, risk management practices, and patient safety culture within the department.

Preferred MBBS, MD/MS, DrNB,DM, Mch, Mphil in the Department of Anaesthesia
