Role & responsibilities:
- Design, size, and engineer liquid waste treatment systems for food and beverage manufacturing: Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) covering screening, equalisation, coagulation/flocculation, DAF, activated sludge, MBBR, anaerobic digestion (UASB/ABR), membrane filtration, and sludge dewatering; Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) using MBR, SBR, or conventional activated sludge processes for domestic wastewater; Multiple Effect Evaporators (MEE) and Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) systems for high-TDS concentrate management; and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system design integrating ETP, MEE/MVR, and crystallisation/evaporation to achieve total effluent elimination; prepare hydraulic profiles, effluent mass balances, and equipment sizing calculations across all systems.
- Prepare full process design deliverables for ETP, STP, MEE/MVR, and ZLD projects: PFDs, P&IDs;, equipment data sheets, layout drawings, steam/energy balances for evaporation systems, and utility demand schedules for construction, upgrade, and optimisation projects.
- Manage all representations and submissions to Pollution Control Boards (CPCB/SPCB) and statutory environmental authorities: prepare and file consent applications (Consent to Establish/CTE and Consent to Operate/CTO), respond to regulatory notices, attend PCB inspections, and maintain compliance registers.
- Support statutory environmental approval processes: co-ordinate Site Vicinity Assessments (SVA), Environmental Clearance (EC) applications, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA),
and Form-1/EIA scoping reports; liaise with accredited environmental consultants and project proponents through the approval lifecycle.
Support Workplace and Social Due Diligence (ESDD) and Legal Due Diligence (LDD) exercises for greenfield/brownfield projects or acquisitions: review existing environmental compliance status, identify legacy environmental liabilities (soil/groundwater contamination, non-compliant discharges, pending PCB actions), assess social impacts, and contribute to ESDD/LDD reports aligned to IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, or lender-specific requirements.
Preferred candidate profile:
- In-depth knowledge of liquid waste treatment process design for food and beverage manufacturing: Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) screening, equalisation, coagulation/flocculation, DAF, activated sludge, MBBR, UASB/anaerobic digestion, membrane filtration (MF/UF/RO), and sludge dewatering; Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) — MBR, SBR, and conventional activated sludge processes for domestic wastewater treatment and reuse; Multiple Effect Evaporators (MEE) and Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) — process design for concentration of high-TDS effluent streams, evaporator sizing, steam economy calculations, and condensate recovery; Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD)
systems — integrated design of ETP + MEE/MVR + crystallisation/forced-circulation evaporation to achieve total elimination of liquid effluent discharge, including brine management and solids handling; proficient in hydraulic profiling, HRT/SRT calculations, organic loading rates, and treatment unit sizing across all systems.
- Process design documentation for ETP, STP, MEE/MVR, and ZLD systems: PFD and P&ID; development, equipment data sheets, hydraulic profiles, effluent mass balance, equipment sizing calculations, steam/energy balance for evaporation systems, and utility demand estimation.
- Environmental management system (EMS): ISO 14001 framework, aspects and impacts assessment, legal register maintenance, environmental objectives and programmes, internal auditing, and management review.
- Regulatory compliance and PCB liaison: knowledge of CPCB/SPCB effluent discharge standards, consent to establish (CTE) and consent to operate (CTO) conditions, preparation and filing of consent applications, responding to PCB notices, accompanying PCB inspections, and maintaining statutory compliance records.
Basic knowledge of statutory environmental approvals: Site Vicinity Assessment (SVA) process and documentation requirements; Environmental Clearance (EC) application under EIA Notification 2006 (as amended); Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) methodology including baseline data collection, impact prediction, mitigation measures, and public hearing process; ability to co-ordinate with accredited EIA consultants and provide technical inputs.
