Lead / Specialist Database Administrator (SQL Server & MongoDB)

Job Summary

The Level 10 Specialist DBA is a senior technical leader and escalation point responsible for the design influence, operational excellence, and strategic evolution of SQL Server and MongoDB platforms. This role combines deep technical expertise, engineering collaboration, and mentorship to ensure highly resilient, secure, and scalable database services.

Key Accountabilities

- Serve as SME and escalation point for critical production incidents and complex database issues
- Lead support of mission-critical SQL Server and MongoDB environments
- Drive operational excellence, reliability, and automation strategy
- Influence and contribute to database engineering standards and patterns
- Architect and optimize HA/DR solutions and deployment patterns
- Own performance optimization strategy and advanced tuning
- Lead root cause analysis and systemic issue remediation
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship across the DBA team
- Lead or facilitate major initiatives, deployments, and platform upgrades
- Ensure regulatory compliance (SOX, PCI, OSFI, etc.) for database platforms
- Define and track operational metrics, KPIs, and reliability indicators

Advanced Technical Responsibilities

- Expert administration of:
- SQL Server (internals, locking, recovery, performance tuning)
- MongoDB (replica sets, sharding, scaling, performance optimization)





- Deep expertise with MongoDB Ops Manager:

- Cluster provisioning
- Monitoring and alerting
- Backup management
- Automation and lifecycle management

- Design and validate:

- Highly available and distributed architectures
- Backup/recovery strategies (enterprise-grade)

- Lead troubleshooting across:

- Database
- OS / compute
- Network
- Storage layers

- Develop advanced automation frameworks using:

- PowerShell, Python, Bash, T-SQL, Mongo scripting

- Integrate observability tools:

- Splunk, Dynatrace, DataDog, etc.

Required Experience & Skills

- 710+ years of DBA experience across SQL Server and MongoDB
- Expert-level knowledge of:
- SQL Server internals and performance tuning
- MongoDB architecture and scaling

- Proven experience with:

- MongoDB Ops Manager (advanced usage)
- Distributed systems and large-scale environments
- HA/DR architecture and implementation

- Strong understanding of:

- OS, networking, and storage integration with DB platforms
- Regulatory and compliance frameworks

Leadership & Strategic Expectations

- Mentor and coach DBAs across skill levels
- Lead knowledge sharing and documentation practices
- Drive process improvements and automation adoption
- Provide input into platform roadmap and engineering direction
- Participate in workload planning, metrics, and operational governance
