A reputed conglomerate is looking to hire a Legal Counsel (Shipping, Maritime Law & Trade Remedies) for its Mumbai office. The ideal candidate should have 6-12 years of post-qualification experience with strong expertise in shipping and maritime law, marine insurance, international trade, and trade remedies.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end shipping and marine insurance claims, including P&I;, FD&D;, Hull & Machinery (H&M;), freight, demurrage, cargo claims, and the complete claims lifecycle from investigation through settlement.
- Draft, review, and negotiate charterparties, shipping contracts, settlement agreements, and other commercial documents, while advising on admiralty law, ship arrests, marine casualties, and international maritime conventions.
- Represent the organization in DGTR investigations, customs proceedings, and other regulatory matters, while advising on anti-dumping, countervailing duties, safeguard measures, customs laws, WTO agreements, and trade compliance.
- Prepare legal opinions, petitions, submissions, and representations, conduct research on domestic and international maritime and trade laws, and provide commercially practical legal advice on cross-border shipping and trade matters.
- Support marine insurance renewals, sanctions compliance, regulatory reporting, and stakeholder management,
while collaborating with internal teams and external parties, including insurers, P&I; Clubs, surveyors, port authorities, and external counsel.
Ideal Candidate
- 6-12 years of post-qualification experience in Shipping, Maritime Law, Marine Insurance, and Trade Remedies.
- Robust experience in shipping litigation, admiralty law, maritime arbitration, marine insurance, or international trade investigations.
- Experience appearing before DGTR, Customs Authorities, Tribunals, High Courts, or Arbitration Forums will be preferred.
- Ability to independently handle complex matters and advise senior business stakeholders.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience advising domestic and multinational businesses.
- Indian-qualified lawyer with an LL.B. (LL.M. in Maritime Law would be an advantage).
- Membership of maritime law associations such as the Indian Maritime Law Association or CMI will be an added advantage.
