Job Summary
Senior Plastic Design Engineer
Role Summary
Responsible for end to end design and development of automotive plastic components for truck cabins and passenger vehicles. The role involves concept development, detailed design, packaging studies, CAD modeling, design validation, and engineering release activities while ensuring compliance with OEM standards, manufacturability, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and release plastic components for cabin interior and exterior systems.
- Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings using NX/CATIA V5 / 3DX.
- Apply injection molding design guidelines during product development. Perform packaging studies and interface management with surrounding systems.
- Support design reviews, feasibility assessments, and DFM activities. Coordinate with CAE, manufacturing, tooling, and suppliers for design optimization.
- Manage engineering changes, issue resolution, and product maturity activities.
- Ensure compliance with OEM standards, GD&T; requirements, and quality processes.
- Support prototype builds, validation activities, and production launch programs.
- Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance.
Qualifications
- Strong expertise in plastic component design for automotive cabin interiors and exteriors.
- Hands-on experience in NX/CATIA V5 / 3DEXPERIENCE for part and assembly design.
- Positive knowledge of injection molding design guidelines and DFM principles.
- Expertise in designing ribs, bosses, dog houses, screw towers, clips, snap fits, and attachment strategies. Understanding of tolerance stack up, GD&T;, and manufacturing feasibility.
- Experience with instrument panel, trim panels, consoles, storage systems, HVAC ducting, covers, and cabin plastic components. Knowledge of tooling concepts, mold flow considerations, and part release requirements.
- Experience working with OEM engineering change management and release processes.
- Ability to coordinate with CAE, manufacturing, tooling, and supplier teams.
- Truck cabin experience preferred; passenger car interior plastics experience is also acceptable.
- 8-10 years of relevant automotive plastic design experience.
