POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (FMT) will hold a senior academic and clinical faculty role at SMIMS & Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim. The incumbent will lead undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching in forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, medical jurisprudence, and forensic evidence, while overseeing mortuary operations, toxicology laboratory supervision, and medico-legal case management. This is a faculty leadership role requiring a highly experienced academic with strong publication credentials, deep NMC compliance, and demonstrated expertise in forensic medicine in a teaching hospital setting.

CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

A. Academic & Teaching Responsibilities

Deliver undergraduate (MBBS) theory lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, clinical classes, and demonstrations in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology as per university curriculum.

Conduct postgraduate (MD/DNB) classes, seminars, and case-based learning sessions in forensic pathology, toxicology, and medico-legal aspects.

Lead and supervise autopsy teaching sessions for MBBS students and PG trainees ensuring pedagogical clarity and adherence to safety and ethical standards.

Mentor postgraduate students in thesis formulation, research methodology, and case study documentation.

Participate in curriculum planning, academic assessment, and examination processes for UG and PG programmes.

Cover duties of other Associate Professors when required, ensuring academic continuity.

B. Clinical & Forensic Responsibilities

Supervise and oversee toxicology laboratory investigations, ensuring accuracy, chain of custody, and medico-legal compliance of specimens and reports.

Ensure proper mortuary management, including adherence to safety protocols, infection control, documentation standards,



and dignified handling of remains.

Conduct and supervise medico-legal autopsies, post-mortem examinations, and forensic evidence collection in accordance with legal and institutional standards.

Prepare medico-legal reports and expert opinions for courts, law enforcement agencies, and institutional authorities as required.

Liaise with judicial, police, and government agencies on medico-legal matters affecting the institution and the community.

Ensure compliance with NABH standards in all forensic and mortuary operations.

C. Research & Publications

Publish a minimum of two research papers in indexed national or international journals as per NMC criteria, with the candidate among the first three authors.

Submit medical articles and forensic science commentary to qualified media and publications on a regular basis.

Lead and contribute to departmental research initiatives in forensic toxicology, forensic pathology, and medico-legal sciences.

Guide postgraduate students in original research and thesis work.

D. Administrative & Other Responsibilities

Assist the Head of Department in departmental administration, academic planning, and quality improvement initiatives.

Participate actively in NABH accreditation activities, hospital quality reviews, and institutional committees.

Engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME), national conferences, and forensic medicine professional bodies.

Undertake any additional duties assigned by the Head of Department or institutional management.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Educational Qualifications

MBBS from a recognized medical institution.

Postgraduate degree: MD / MS / DNB in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (or equivalent recognized qualification) from a recognized institution.

Teaching Experience (as per NMC Regulations)





Candidates must meet one of the following experience criteria:

(a)(i) Minimum 4 years as Assistant Professor in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at a recognized medical institution; OR minimum 5 years for those directly appointed as Assistant Professor in a Government medical institution; OR

(a)(ii) Specialist Medical Officer of the Armed Forces with at least 5 years post-PG clinical experience in FMT, of which at least 3 years as Assistant Professor in an Armed Forces teaching hospital; OR

(b) Non-teaching Consultant / Specialist / Medical Officer with a PG medical degree and at least 10 years of experience in a Government hospital of at least 220 beds (must complete Basic Course in Medical Education and Basic Course in Biomedical Research within 2 years of appointment).

Note (Aviation / Marine Medicine): Up to 4 years of experience in Flying Squadrons or Diving/Escape Training Schools counts as equivalent to 2 years of teaching experience for becoming Associate Professor.

Research & Compliance Requirements

Minimum 2 research publications in indexed journals after becoming Assistant Professor (first three authors).

Completed Basic Course in Biomedical Research from an NMC-designated institution.

Must have undergone (or be willing to undergo) the Basic Course in Medical Education (where FMT is covered under UG training).

Valid registration with the State Medical Council or National Medical Commission.
