We are seeking an Embedded Software Developer to design and develop safety-critical software for the European Train Control System (ETCS). The role involves working on real-time embedded platforms to ensure safe train operation, speed supervision, and signaling compliance as per European railway standards.
Please find the below JD details for the required position-
Role & responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software using C/C++ for safety critical systems
- Implement core functionalities such as:
- Safety critical system principles of trackside and/or onboard systems understanding
- ETCS ATP functions requirements gathering
- ETCS ATP functions implementation in accordance with SIL4 safety lifecycle and MISRA C coding guidelines
- Design of ATP functions for Implementation of requirements and traceability
- Module, Unit and System level testing
- Risk assessment and safety case
- Involvement in system safety certifications with ISA
- Work on bare metal, real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded firmware
- Ensure compliance with CENELEC standards (railway safety standards)
- Prepare technical documentation (SRS, SAD, SWRS, SDD, test specifications, traceability matrix)
- Collaborate with system engineering, hardware, validation, and certification teams
Preferred candidate profile
Technical Skills
- Strong programming skills in C/C++ (mandatory)
- Strong knowledge in Microcontroller and Microprocessors
- Hands on experience in interfacing COTS modules (such as GPS, GSM)
- Robust knowledge in Ethernet and security
- Experience in embedded systems development (ARM Cortex, microcontrollers)
- Hands-on experience with RTOS(e.g., FreeRTOS, VxWorks, QNX)
- Knowledge of communication protocols: UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet, USB, AD-Bus
- Understanding of real-time constraints and deterministic systems
- Basic electronics knowledge for Hardware debugging
- Experience in ATP system development
- Experience in CENELEC (V model) lifecycle or ASIL-D or DO-178C

Role & Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software in C/C++ for safety-critical railway systems (ETCS onboard and/or trackside EVC/RBC interfaces)
- Implement ETCS ATP functionalities in compliance with SIL-4 safety lifecycle, MISRA C/C++ guidelines, and project safety plans
System Engineering & Cross-Domain Responsibilities
- Contribute to system-level architecture and allocation, including HW/SW partitioning
- Perform requirements engineering: analysis, decomposition, allocation,and clarification of ETCS ATP requirements
- Ensure end-to-end traceability (System Software Code Test Validation evidence)
- Interface with hardware teams for board bring-up, integration, and debugging
- Participate in system integration activities, including lab and field validation
Safety Engineering & Certification
- Perform hazard analysis and risk assessment (PHA, SHA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA as applicable)
- Define and verify safety requirements and safety mechanisms (fail-safe states, redundancy, diagnostics)
- Support Functional Safety Testing (FST), including scenarios requiring deep hardware-software interaction
- Contribute to safety case development (evidence generation, justification,compliance demonstration)
- Actively participate in ISA (Independent Safety Assessor) audits, including:
- Technical clarification sessions
- Review support and evidence presentation
- Technical Note (TN) analysis and closure
Software Development & Verification
- Develop software on bare-metal and RTOS-based platforms ensuring deterministic and real-time behavior
- Implement and integrate communication interfaces and protocols, including ETCS-specific interfaces where applicable
- Perform:
- Static analysis and code reviews (MISRA compliance)
- Unit, module, integration, and system testing
- Debugging on target hardware using standard tools
Compliance & Documentation
- Ensure compliance with CENELEC standards:
- EN 50126 (RAMS lifecycle)
- EN 50128 (software)
- EN 50129 (safety case)
- Prepare and maintain engineering and safety documentation, including:
- SRS, SWRS, SAD/SDD
- Interface specifications (ICDs)
- Test specifications and reports
- Traceability matrix (bi-directional)
- Safety analysis reports (FMEA, FTA, etc.)
Collaboration
- Work closely with system engineering, hardware, V&V;, RAMS, and certification teams
- Participate in design reviews, safety reviews, and audits
Preferred Candidate Profile
Core Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in C/C++ (mandatory) for embedded systems
- Strong knowledge of microcontrollers/microprocessors (ARM Cortex or equivalent)
- Experience with bare-metal and RTOS-based development (QNX, VxWorks, FreeRTOS)
- Deep understanding of real-time systems and deterministic execution
- Strong experience in hardware-software integration and debugging
Hardware & Interface Exposure (Mandatory for this Role)
- Hands-on experience with board-level debugging (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG)
- Experience interfacing with COTS modules (e.g., GPS, GSM-R/communication modules, sensors)
- Strong understanding of:
- Digital interfaces: UART, SPI, I2C, CAN
- High-speed interfaces: Ethernet, USB
- Basic understanding of signal integrity, timing, and embedded hardware constraints
Safety & Railway Domain Expertise
- Experience in ETCS / ATP system development (highly preferred)
- Strong understanding of:
- Train control & protection logic (movement authority, supervision, braking curves)
- Fail-safe principles,redundancy, and fault-tolerant design
- Hands-on experience with:
- FMEA / FMECA / FTA / hazard analysis
- Safety lifecycle (CENELEC V-model)
- Exposure to ISA audits, safety case preparation, and TN closure
Standards & Compliance
- Strong familiarity with:
- CENELEC EN 50126 /50128 / 50129
- MISRA C/C++ guidelines
- Exposure to equivalent safety domains is acceptable:
- ISO 26262 (ASIL-D)
- DO-178C (DAL A/B)
