Role & responsibilities
As an Engineer Software Full Stack (API Gateway & AI Infrastructure), you will design and build the software that powers T-Mobile’s gateway platform and AI infrastructure layer — spanning control plane APIs and operator tooling for API Gateway and Istio, developer-facing portals and dashboards, and backend services that manage routing, policy, and observability for AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and LLM gateways. You will take end-to-end ownership from UI to cloud infrastructure, ensuring the platform is reliable, extensible, and built for the demands of AI-native workloads. Success is measured by the quality and adoptability of the tools you ship, uptime of platform services, and developer productivity gains. You will also apply AI coding tools, prompt engineering, and agentic patterns as a core part of your day-to-day SDLC — going beyond prototypes to production-grade use. We pride ourselves on encouraging a culture of innovation, agile ways of working, and transparency in all we do. Join us in embodying the spirit of the Un-carrier and make a tangible impact! What You’ll Do: • Build and maintain developer portals, operational dashboards, and self-service UIs for the API Gateway and Istio platform — enabling teams to configure routes, policies, and traffic rules without deep mesh expertise. • Develop backend APIs and microservices that interface with Kubernetes controllers, API custom resources, and Istio control plane APIs to automate gateway provisioning, policy enforcement, and configuration lifecycle. • Engineer platform services for AI gateway use cases: MCP server registration and routing, LLM provider management (failover, rate limiting, semantic caching), and AI agent ingress configuration. • Design and extend data storage mechanisms — relational and non-relational — for gateway configuration state, traffic policy audit logs, AI usage metrics, and MCP tool catalogs. • Maintain cloud services and infrastructure as code (Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes manifests) to support consistent,
repeatable deployments of gateway and AI platform components. • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for gateway configuration promotion and platform service deployments, including GitOps workflows with Argo CD or Flux. • Write testable, maintainable code with automated unit and integration tests; participate in peer code reviews with a focus on security, correctness, and operational safety for gateway-layer changes. • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across the full stack — UI, platform APIs, Kubernetes resources, Envoy proxy behavior, and cloud infrastructure. • Collaborate with SRE, security, and AI engineering teams to decompose platform features into user stories, define API contracts for gateway and AI services, and deliver accurate estimates. • Apply AI coding tools, prompt engineering, and agentic patterns as a core part of the SDLC — using them in production-grade workflows beyond prototypes (e.g., code generation, test generation, gateway config validation assistants, automated reviews). • Contribute to a culture of innovation, agile ways of working, and transparency across the team. What You’ll Bring: • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent demonstrated experience. • Minimum 2 years of related work experience in software engineering. • 2–4 years of full stack web development experience, including front end and back end; experience building internal developer platforms or operational tooling is a strong plus. • Proficiency in a contemporary front end framework (React preferred) alongside TypeScript/JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and build tooling such as webpack or Vite. • Back end experience in Go, Python,
or Node.js; familiarity with building Kubernetes operators or controllers is a plus. • Working knowledge of Kubernetes concepts (CRDs, controllers, namespaces, RBAC) and comfort reading or writing Kubernetes manifests and Helm charts. • Familiarity with service mesh or API gateway concepts (Istio, Gloo Gateway, Envoy, Kong, or similar); understanding of traffic routing, mTLS, and policy enforcement is valued. • Exposure to AI gateway or LLM infrastructure concepts: MCP protocol, LLM proxy routing, token-rate limiting, model provider APIs (OpenAI, Bedrock, Azure OpenAI), or AI agent communication patterns. • 2–4 years designing database schemas and writing SQL; experience with PostgreSQL and a time-series or document store is a plus. • 1+ year of DevOps experience with infrastructure as code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar). • 2–4 years using cloud services from AWS, Azure, or GCP. • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices; GitOps experience (Argo CD, Flux) is a plus. • Demonstrated proficiency using AI coding tools, prompt engineering, and agentic patterns in real engineering workflows — applied in the SDLC beyond prototypes. • Strong collaboration skills; self-directed and motivated, able to take ownership of deliverables end to end. Must Have Skills: • React (or equivalent frontend framework), TypeScript/JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. • Backend service and microservice development in Go, Python, or Node.js. • Kubernetes concepts, manifests, and Helm chart authoring. • Service mesh or API gateway platform knowledge (Gloo Gateway, Istio, or Envoy strongly preferred). • AI gateway, MCP protocol, and LLM infrastructure concepts. • Relational and non-relational databases, schema design, and SQL. • Cloud services (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and infrastructure as code. • CI/CD pipelines and GitOps-based DevOps workflows. • AI coding tools, prompt engineering, and agentic skill application in the SDLC (production-grade, beyond prototypes).
