Job Description: On-Premise Deployment Engineer
Position Overview:
Vrtekh is seeking an experienced On-Premise Deployment Engineer to join our team, working on a
fully offline, self-contained industrial IoT supervision platform deployed at customer sites across Europe.
The ideal candidate will own the release engineering and packaging pipeline, operate customer sites
remotely through customer-provided VPN, and shape the platform's scalability and high-availability
roadmap as the customer count grows. The role requires deep hands-on knowledge of Linux, Docker,
Kubernetes (K3S), and the operational discipline required for offline on-premise deployments.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Release Engineering & Packaging:
Turn what the development team ships into signed, offline-installable bundles with version
pinning and deterministic builds.
Maintain and improve the K3S-based deployment automation (Bash scripts, YAML manifests,
planned migration to Kustomize).
Smoke-test current releases against a fresh K3S install before shipping to customer sites.
Own the offline-bundle workflow end to end.
2. Customer Site Operations:
Operate 36 customer sites via customer-provided Citrix / VPN access incident response,
upgrades, configuration changes.
Monitor fleet health daily through Prometheus + Grafana; respond proactively to alerts
before customers notice.
Serve as first technical responder during EU morning hours (06:0015:00 CET); escalate to
the EU lead thereafter.
Work productively within constrained environments (Citrix, VDI, jump hosts, no internet at
customer sites).
3. High Availability and Scalability Advisory:
Advise on HA options across the stack: K3S multi-node, PostgreSQL replication (Patroni,
CloudNativePG), Kafka multi-broker, Redis clustering, Keycloak clustering.
Recommend the appropriate deployment tier per customer (single-node, HA, scaled) with cost
and operational trade-offs.
Design no-downtime migration paths from single-node to HA configurations without full
reinstalls.
4. Runbook Development and Documentation:
Write and maintain runbooks for deployment, P1 incident scenarios, backup/restore
procedures, and upgrade paths.
Keep architecture and decision documents current as the platform evolves.
Ensure the platform is operable by another engineer without direct handover.
5. Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with the EU-based development and operations team.
Contribute to architectural decisions through structured proposals (ADRs).
Support the eventual identification and training of a deputy engineer for continuity.
Technical Skills Required:
1. Operating Systems and Scripting:
3+ years hands-on Linux in production (RHEL, Ubuntu, or Debian family).
Bash scripting fluency proven ability to write and maintain multi-hundred-line production
scripts, not just one-liners.
Proficiency with systemd, journald, and standard Linux networking diagnostics.
2. Containers and Orchestration:
2+ years Docker in production image building, networking, volumes, multi-stage builds.
Working Kubernetes operations reading logs, debugging CrashLoopBackOf f and
other failure modes, writing manifests, understanding StatefulSet vs Deployment.
K3S experience specifically is a plus but not required.
3. Databases and Messaging:
Stateful database operations basics PostgreSQL preferred; MySQL, Oracle, or MSSQL
accepted as transferable signal.
Understanding of WAL, backup/restore, and replication concepts.
Familiarity with Apache Kafka concepts (topics, partitions, consumer groups, replication
factor) is preferred.
4.
Monitoring and Observability:
Prometheus and Grafana operations reading existing dashboards, interpreting PromQL,
modifying alert rules.
Ability to debug missing or stale metrics.
5. Remote Access and Constrained Environments:
Comfort with Citrix, VDI, jump hosts, restricted clipboards, and no-internet build setups.
SSH key management and tunnel configuration.
6. Version Control and Documentation:
Proficiency with Git and GitLab (or GitHub) workflows.
Ability to write clear technical documentation for engineering peers.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field.
36 years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, or Platform Engineering.
Prior on-premise or customer-deployment experience (telecom, banking, industrial automation,
or MSP backgrounds all count).
Exposure to HA patterns able to reason about active-passive vs active-active, quorum,
split-brain, replication lag.
Familiarity with Kustomize or Helm.
Hands-on experience with Kafka, InfluxDB, Keycloak, or MQTT brokers.
Fluent written and spoken English, comfortable in European customer-facing calls.
Personal Attributes:
Strong problem-solving skills with an operations-first mindset.
Excellent communication and written documentation habits.
Comfortable working with limited access and constrained tooling.
Self-motivated with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing platform gaps.
Comfortable pushing back respectfully on scope creep and unclear requirements.
Location: India, remote
Employment Type: Full-time
Working Hours: 09:30 18:30 IST (overlap with EU: 06:00 15:00 CET)
Compensation: Competitive salary with benefits and opportunities for professional growth.
If you are passionate about building reliable, well-engineered on-premise systems and enjoy the
discipline of shipping software into constrained customer environments, apply now to join our team!
