Key Roles and Responsibilities of a School Bus Driver
Safe Transportation
Drive the school bus safely and responsibly along designated routes.
Follow all traffic laws and school transportation regulations.
Adjust driving to accommodate weather, road, and traffic conditions.
Student Safety
Ensure students board and exit the bus safely.
Monitor student behavior while on the bus.
Enforce school transportation rules and report reliable disciplinary issues.
Assist younger students or students with special needs when necessary.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus.
Check brakes, lights, tires, mirrors, emergency exits, and safety equipment.
Report mechanical problems or maintenance needs promptly.
Route Management
Follow assigned routes and schedules.
Maintain accurate pickup and drop-off times.
Communicate delays or route issues to transportation supervisors.
Emergency Response
Respond appropriately to accidents, breakdowns, or medical emergencies.
Evacuate students safely when required.
Administer basic first aid if trained and authorized.




Record Keeping
Maintain required logs and reports.
Record mileage, incidents, inspections, and student attendance if required by the employer.
Complete accident and incident reports accurately.
Communication
Maintain skilled communication with students, parents, teachers, and transportation staff.
Report safety concerns, student issues, or route changes to supervisors.
Compliance with Regulations
Maintain a valid commercial driving license and required certifications.
Follow school district policies and government transportation regulations.
Participate in required training and safety programs.
