Job description:
A Tooling Engineer in the sheet metal manufacturing industry is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and optimization of tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and related equipment used in production. The primary objective is to ensure reliable tooling that supports quality, productivity, cost efficiency, and timely delivery.
Roles & Responsibilities1. Tool Design & Development
- Design and develop sheet metal tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges.
- Prepare 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software.
- Review product drawings for manufacturability (DFM).
- Select appropriate tool materials and heat treatment specifications.
- Standardize tooling designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
- Develop progressive, compound, and blanking dies as required.
2. New Product Development (NPD)
- Participate in recent product development and APQP activities.
- Assess tooling feasibility during product design reviews.
- Estimate tooling costs and lead times.
- Coordinate tool trials and production validation.
- Support PPAP and first article inspection (FAI) activities.
- Ensure tooling is ready before production launch.
3. Tool Manufacturing & Procurement
- Coordinate with tool rooms and external toolmakers for fabrication.
- Monitor tooling manufacturing progress against project schedules.
- Inspect new tools before acceptance.
- Verify tooling dimensions and functionality against design specifications.
- Manage vendor development for tooling suppliers.
4. Tool Maintenance
- Develop preventive maintenance schedules for production tooling.
- Monitor tool life and maintain tool history records.
- Analyze tool wear and recommend repairs or modifications.
- Ensure timely refurbishment of dies and fixtures.
- Minimize tooling-related production downtime.
5. Production Support
- Provide technical support for stamping and fabrication operations.
- Troubleshoot tooling issues affecting production.
- Optimize tool setup and changeover time.
- Assist operators during tool installation and commissioning.
- Resolve production issues related to tooling failures.
6. Process Improvement
- Improve tooling performance to enhance productivity.
- Reduce scrap and rework through tooling modifications.
- Increase tool life using improved materials or coatings.
- Implement SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) techniques.
- Standardize tooling components to reduce inventory.

Qualification & Experience
- Education: Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Tool Engineering, Production Engineering, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Experience: Typically 3–10 years in sheet metal tooling, die design, tool room operations, or manufacturing engineering, depending on the seniority of the role.
Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹35,000.00 per month
