Job Description: A Chemical Engineer or Chemist in the manufacture of refractory ceramic products plays a critical role in developing, testing, and optimizing heat-resistant materials (such as bricks, castables, and coatings) that withstand extreme temperatures, corrosion, and mechanical stress. They oversee the transformation of raw materials like alumina, silica, and magnesia into finished products for industries such as steel, cement, and petrochemicals. Here is a comprehensive job description for this role. Job Summary The Refractory Chemist/Chemical Engineer is responsible for conducting R&D;, managing quality control (QC) of raw materials and finished products, and optimizing manufacturing processes (mixing, molding, drying, firing) to enhance product performance, such as thermal shock resistance and chemical stability. Key Responsibilities and Duties 1. Research & Development (R&D;) and Formulation
- Formulation Development: Design new refractory formulations (mix designs) and improve existing products to enhance heat resistance, structural integrity, and service life.
- Material Testing: Conduct thermal analysis, chemical analysis, and physical testing (e.g., porosity, cold crushing strength, Bulk Density) of refractories.
- Innovation: Research advanced ceramic materials and additives to reduce energy consumption during firing or improve performance in corrosive environments. 2. Production Optimization and Quality Control (QC)
- Raw Material Inspection: "Gatekeep" the lab by testing raw materials (Alumina, Magnesia, Silica, binders) for purity and consistency before production.
- Process Monitoring: Oversee mixing, pressing, and casting operations to ensure consistency.
- Firing/Sintering Control: Monitor and adjust kiln temperature profiles (baking and drying schedules)
to ensure complete sintering and minimize shrinkage/cracking.
- QC Testing: Perform wet chemical analysis, XRF/XRD mineral analysis, and physical evaluations on finished products to ensure compliance with ISO/ASTM standards. 3. Troubleshooting and Technical Support
- Root Cause Analysis: Diagnose premature refractory failures (e.g., spalling, chemical attack, erosion) through microscopy or chemical analysis.
- Production Troubleshooting: Resolve issues related to product defects (cracks, warping) in the manufacturing line.
- Technical Support: Provide technical data sheets and support for foundry or industrial furnace clients. 4. Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- HSE Management: Implement strict safety procedures regarding hazardous materials and dust control.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding emissions.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or Chemistry.
- Experience: 1–5+ years in refractory manufacturing, ceramics, or industrial high-temperature materials.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of ceramic sintering, refractory material properties (acidic, basic, neutral), and mineralogy.
- Laboratory Skills: Proficiency with testing instruments (XRD, XRF, TGA/DTA, particle size analyzers).
- Soft Skills: Robust analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, "hands-on" approach, and team collaboration.
Typical Work Environment
- A blend of laboratory (testing/R&D;) and industrial production floor (manufacturing/kilns).
- Exposure to high temperatures, noise, and dusty environments may occur.
