Job Description: A Chemist in the manufacturing of refractory ceramic products (often titled Refractory Chemist, QC Chemist, or R&D; Chemist) is responsible for ensuring the quality, performance, and innovation of high-temperature materials used in industrial furnaces, kilns, and reactors. They manage raw material testing, develop new formulations, and control production processes to meet stringent industry standards. Key Responsibilities
- Quality Control (QC) & Testing: Perform and oversee laboratory tests on raw materials (alumina, silica, magnesia) and finished products, including Cold Crushing Strength (CCS), Modulus of Rupture (HMOR), bulk density, and porosity.
- Formulation Development (R&D;): Develop new, cost-effective refractory castables, bricks, and coating formulations, and improve existing products.
- Process Optimization: Monitor and control critical production parameters such as particle size distribution (PSD), moisture content, binder dosage, mixing homogeneity, and firing schedules in kilns.
- Analytical Testing: Analyze chemical composition and microstructural features using techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD) or microscopic analysis to ensure compliance with standards.
- Troubleshooting: Address production issues,
such as cracking, insufficient strength, or incorrect sizing, and implement corrective actions.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure compliance with ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001), EHS protocols, and environmental regulations regarding emissions. Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or Ceramic Engineering.
- Experience: Previous experience in the ceramic, refractory, mining, or metallurgy industry is highly preferred.
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of refractory materials (acidic/basic), phase diagrams, mineralogy, and laboratory equipment operation.
- Software Proficiency: Familiarity with ERP software (e.g., SAP) for production planning.
- Analytical Skills: Solid ability to analyze data, interpret material properties, and problem-solve. Key Competencies
