Mortgage Underwriter Job Description

Summary

We are seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join our team. This role requires deep underwriting expertise, including comprehensive knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA guidelines, to perform continuous testing of mortgage products.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience analyzing income, assets, credit, AUS findings, and collateral documentation. This role involves applying underwriting rules, performing income calculations, and generating conditions. The Mortgage Underwriter will also collaborate closely with Sales and Product teams to support product enhancements and current feature development.

Key Responsibilities
Product Testing
Apply advanced knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA guidelines to test mortgage underwriting tools and validate accuracy.
Review borrower documentation, including:
Income
Assets
Credit
Collateral
AUS findings
Ensure correct application of underwriting rules within the system (e.g., income calculation outputs).
Document test results, identify discrepancies, and recommend solutions to maintain compliance with agency and investor standards.
Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on underwriting practices,



providing clarity to both technical and non-technical teams.
Collaboration & Communication
Translate complex underwriting requirements into clear, easy language.
Partner with the Product team to identify and suggest enhancements.
Provide ongoing SME support to the Sales team.
Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

Required Skills & Qualifications
3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience, including FHA and VA loans.
Solid experience reviewing borrower documentation such as:
W-2s
Tax returns
Pay stubs
Self-employment income
Appraisals
Title documents
Expertise in:
Income analysis
Credit evaluation
AUS findings interpretation
Tech-savvy with the ability to evaluate mortgage software and clearly explain insights.
Robust documentation, prioritization, and communication skills.
Experience in testing technology products/tools is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with fintech or SaaS mortgage platforms.
Familiarity with automated income calculation or verification tools.
Exposure to Agile product development environments.
