Description
A Software Development Manager (SDM) leads engineering teams to design, build, and deploy software products. They bridge the gap between technical execution and business goals, balancing project delivery with team mentoring, architectural oversight, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- People Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and manage the performance of a team of software engineers. Conduct 1-on-1s, set career development goals, and foster a healthy, inclusive culture.
- Project Delivery: Own the software development life cycle (SDLC) from conception through architecture, testing, and deployment. Manage backlogs, prioritize features, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget
- Technical Strategy: Guide system design, code quality, and technical vision. Ensure adoption of best practices like Agile methodologies, CI/CD, and DevOps
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Act as the liaison between your technical team, product managers, upper management, and external stakeholders
Essential Requirements
- Education & Experience: Typically a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, combined with 10+ years of overall software engineering experience.
- Leadership Track: 3–5+ years in a formal engineering management or technical lead role, showcasing a track record of scaling high-performing teams.
- Technical Chops: Hands-on background in up-to-date programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++), distributed systems architecture, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and strategic problem-solving abilities.
