Role Overview The Senior DB Engineer SQL/Azure provides L2 database operations support for SQL Server and Azure SQL environments in a 24x7, SLA-driven production setting. The role focuses on incident and alert investigation, ticket ownership for P2–P4 issues, and timely escalation to L3 for non-SOP or design-level items. You will execute operational runbooks for provisioning, patching, backup/recovery, and routine maintenance, while maintaining strong ticket hygiene and communication.
The engineer performs health checks, monitors system metrics and jobs, supports change execution, and contributes to RCA documentation and SOP/KEDB updates within a managed L1/L2 support model.
Required Qualifications
- 4–6 years of hands-on SQL Server DBA/production support experience in 24x7 environments
- Experience supporting Azure SQL Database and/or Azure SQL Managed Instance
- Proficiency with incident, problem, and change management processes (e.g., ServiceNow/Jira)
- Strong backup/recovery knowledge (full/diff/log, PITR, LTR) and database maintenance
- Performance troubleshooting of common issues (waits, blocking, deadlocks, tempdb, resource bottlenecks)
- Monitoring and health checks across CPU, memory, storage, jobs, and growth, with alert triage
- Patching/change execution using approved runbooks, with pre-checks and post-checks
- Access management support and operational troubleshooting
- Willingness to work rotating 24x7 shifts, weekends, and on-call coverage
- Good-to-have: PowerShell and T-SQL scripting for automation
- Good-to-have: Knowledge of Always On Availability Groups, replication, and log shipping
- Good-to-have: Experience with monitoring/alerting tools and audit/compliance evidence collection
- Valuable-to-have: Contribution to RCA documentation and SOP/KEDB updates
- Good-to-have: Exposure to PostgreSQL and Oracle in mixed-platform operations
Responsibilities
- Own and resolve P2–P4 tickets within L2 scope; investigate alerts, incidents, and service disruptions
- Join major incident bridges as needed; escalate non-SOP/design topics to L3 with clear evidence
- Execute approved operational changes and database provisioning per runbooks
- Support backup validation, recovery requests, and routine database maintenance tasks
- Perform patching activities with required pre-checks/post-checks and document outcomes
- Analyze CPU, memory, disk, job status, availability, and growth alerts; run health-check scripts and document findings
- Review and remediate failed jobs and backup failures; maintain strong ticket hygiene and timely updates
- Support access management requests and operational troubleshooting across SQL Server and Azure SQL
- Assist migrations/deployments under approved runbooks; contribute to RCA documentation and problem reduction
- Update SOPs and KEDB articles; provide inputs for weekly/monthly operational reporting
- Operate strictly within L1/L2 scope; hand off non-operational engineering, architecture, or code issues to L3/Engineering
