VMC Operator & Programmer (Aerospace / Space & Defence Components)

Job Summary The VMC Operator & Programmer is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating Vertical Machining Centers (VMC) to manufacture high-precision components used in space, aerospace, and defence systems. The role requires strict adherence to aerospace quality standards, tight tolerances, and traceability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. CNC Programming

Develop CNC programs for VMC machines using G-code / CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, NX, Fusion 360).

Optimize machining parameters for precision, surface finish, and tool life.

Modify and debug programs during production.

2. Machine Setup & Operation

Set up fixtures, tools, and work offsets for VMC machining.

Perform machining of complex aerospace components from materials such as:

Aluminium alloys (6061, 7075)

Titanium alloys

Stainless steel

Inconel / superalloys

Operate machines while maintaining micron-level tolerances.

3. Blueprint & CAD Interpretation

Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T;, and CAD models.

Understand critical dimensions, tolerances, and surface finish requirements.

4. Quality Control

Perform in-process inspection using:

Vernier calipers

Micrometers

Height gauges

Bore gauges

Dial indicators

Ensure compliance with AS9100 / aerospace quality standards.

Maintain component traceability records.

5. Tooling & Process Optimization

Select proper cutting tools, inserts, and holders.

Implement tool path optimization to improve efficiency and reduce cycle time.

Troubleshoot machining issues like

Surface defects

6. Documentation

Maintain process sheets, setup sheets, and inspection reports.

Follow Defence and space manufacturing documentation procedures.

Support First Article Inspection (FAI) and production validation.

7. Safety & Compliance

Follow shop safety practices and aerospace manufacturing standards.

Ensure proper handling of sensitive defence components and materials.

Required Skills

Robust knowledge of CNC machining and VMC operations

Understanding of GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance)

Experience with CAM software
