- Engineers or designers has to create the tooling used in sheet metal press operations, such as dies, fixtures, and related equipment for manufacturing.
- Designing press tools (blanking, piercing, bending, forming, and progressive dies).
- Creating 2D drawings and 3D models using CAD software such as AutoCAD, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, or SolidWorks.
- Selecting tool materials and components.
- Ensuring the tool can produce parts accurately and efficiently.
- Working with production and quality teams to troubleshoot tooling issues.
- A press tool designer usually needs knowledge of:
- Sheet metal manufacturing processes
- Die design principles
- GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
- Manufacturing methods and materials
- CAD/CAM software
