Job Purpose:
Lead concept development and selection of optimum development scheme including finalisation of product line by integrating subsurface understanding, gasification strategies, surface configurations and product lines to define technically robust, economically viable, and scalable solutions for a UCG Project commercial development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define concept development frameworks, evaluation criteria and decision methodologies to enable structured screening and selection of optimum configuration across upstream, mining and downstream systems.
- Integrate inputs from subsurface, gasification modelling and engineering disciplines to develop end-to-end UCG Project concepts covering well configurations, injection strategies, cavity development approaches and surface processing schemes.
- Evaluate multiple concept options by assessing technical feasibility, operability, cost implications, and scalability potential and recommend optimal configurations aligned with business objectives.
- Translate subsurface uncertainties, seam characteristics and reservoir behavior into concept-level design assumptions, operating philosophies, and system configurations.
- Align upstream (well and injection systems), mining (gasification and cavity development) and downstream (product line, gas processing and utilization) concepts to establish coherent and integrated system designs.
- Define Basis of Design (BoD), process philosophies and initial engineering parameters to enable smooth transition from concept to FEED and detailed engineering phases.
- Consolidate discipline-level concept inputs (process, I&C;, cost estimation)
into integrated concept packages with clear design assumptions, constraints and performance expectations.
- Assess business risks associated with concept options, including cost uncertainty, operability limitations, scalability constraints and technology readiness and incorporate mitigation strategies into concept selection.
- Evaluate concept alternatives against commercial viability, pilot learning objectives and long-term development potential to support investment and stage-gate decisions.
- Define concept-level cost estimation approaches, benchmarking methodologies, uncertainties and economic evaluation frameworks to compare options and support decision-making.
- Validate cost estimates and economic assumptions by aligning technical configurations with realistic execution and operational scenarios.
- Drive identification and evaluation of emerging technologies, process configurations and digital tools relevant to the UCG Project, and incorporate suitable innovations into concept designs to improve performance and reduce uncertainty.
- Initiate concept-level studies, pilot trials or technology collaborations to address key uncertainties in gasification control, monitoring, and process optimization.
- Structure and allocate concept engineering scope across upstream, mining, downstream, I&C; and cost teams and address capability gaps to strengthen concept development depth and quality.
- Drive alignment with subsurface, engineering, technical support and project controls teams by consolidating concept assumptions and enabling integrated decision-making.
- Define data requirements, assumptions and modelling inputs required for concept development, and validate consistency and traceability of inputs across disciplines.
- Review concept maturity, uncertainties, and risks at defined stage gates. Recommend progression, modification, or rejection of concepts based on structured evaluation.
- Mature the Project to various stage gates, lead stage gate review processes and action out the review findings.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum Engineering or related discipline.
- 20+ years of experience in engineering, process design or upstream/downstream project development within oil & gas, gasification, CBM or similar subsurface-linked domains.
- 10+ years of concept engineering experience in Oil & Gas, CBM, Downstream, or any other relevant areas
- Solid understanding of subsurface–surface integration, gasification processes, and system-level design thinking.
- Experience in techno-economic evaluation, concept screening and development planning.
- Ability to evaluate technical and commercial trade-offs under uncertainty.
- Familiarity with Clean Energy concepts or analogous thermal/subsurface technologies.
- Exposure to cost estimation, economic modelling, and project evaluation frameworks.
- Experience in technology evaluation, innovation integration, and early-stage project development.
