Position: Consultant Neonatologist

Department

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) / Pediatrics

Reports To

Medical Director / Chief Executive Officer / Head of Pediatrics

Job Purpose To provide comprehensive medical care to newborn infants, especially premature, critically ill, and high-risk neonates, ensuring quality treatment, patient safety, and compliance with hospital protocols.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

- Examine, diagnose, and treat newborn infants, including premature and critically ill babies.
- Manage patients admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
- Attend high-risk deliveries, Caesarean sections, and emergency neonatal resuscitations.
- Stabilize newborns requiring intensive care.
- Develop and implement treatment plans based on evidence-based clinical practice.
- Perform neonatal procedures within the scope of practice.
- Monitor the progress of admitted neonates and modify treatment plans as required.
- Ensure timely referrals to other specialists whenever necessary.

2. NICU Management

- Supervise and manage all NICU admissions and discharges.
- Conduct daily NICU rounds and review treatment plans.
- Ensure compliance with NICU protocols and infection control practices.
- Monitor ventilator management, CPAP, oxygen therapy, phototherapy, and neonatal monitoring.
- Ensure protected medication practices and neonatal nutrition management.

3. Emergency Care

- Provide 24×7 emergency neonatal care as per duty roster.
- Attend emergency deliveries requiring neonatal support.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation according to accepted clinical guidelines.
- Manage critically ill neonates requiring advanced life support.

4. Clinical Procedures Perform or supervise procedures such as:

- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
- Endotracheal Intubation
- Umbilical Venous and Arterial Catheterization
- Lumbar Puncture
- Peripheral and Central Line Insertion
- Surfactant Administration
- Exchange Transfusion (where indicated)




- Chest Tube Insertion (if clinically indicated)
- Mechanical Ventilation and CPAP Management

5. Documentation

- Maintain complete and accurate patient records.
- Record daily progress notes and treatment plans.
- Complete discharge summaries and death summaries.
- Ensure proper documentation for insurance and medicolegal cases.
- Maintain NICU registers and statutory records.

6. Communication

- Counsel parents regarding diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and follow-up care.
- Obtain informed consent before procedures.
- Coordinate with pediatricians, obstetricians, anesthetists, nursing staff, and other specialists.
- Participate in multidisciplinary clinical meetings.

7. Quality & Patient Safety

- Ensure compliance with Hospital policies, SOPs, and clinical protocols.
- Promote patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
- Participate in mortality and morbidity meetings, clinical audits, and quality reviews.
- Report adverse events and sentinel incidents promptly.

8. Infection Prevention & Control

- Ensure strict compliance with infection control policies.
- Promote hand hygiene and aseptic practices.
- Monitor antimicrobial stewardship practices.
- Participate in Hospital Infection Control Committee activities when required.

9. Training & Education

- Train and mentor Resident Medical Officers (RMOs), interns, nursing staff, and NICU personnel.
- Conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions and departmental teaching programs.
- Guide staff on neonatal resuscitation and emergency protocols.

10. Administrative Responsibilities

- Participate in departmental meetings.




- Assist in preparing NICU policies, SOPs, and clinical guidelines.
- Ensure optimal utilization of NICU resources and equipment.
- Coordinate with Biomedical Engineering for maintenance of NICU equipment.
- Assist during accreditation and statutory inspections.

Qualifications

- MBBS from a recognized medical institution.
- MD/DNB Pediatrics.
- DM/DNB/Fellowship in Neonatology (preferred or as applicable).
- Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or the applicable State Medical Council.

Experience

- Experience in managing NICU patients and neonatal emergencies.
- Experience in handling ventilators and neonatal intensive care equipment is preferred.

Skills Required

- Strong neonatal critical care skills.
- Neonatal resuscitation expertise.
- Excellent clinical decision-making ability.
- Effective communication and counselling skills.
- Leadership and team management.
- Emergency response capability.
- Knowledge of NABH standards and quality protocols.
- Computer proficiency and familiarity with Hospital Information Systems (HIS/EMR).

Working Conditions

- Rotational shifts and on-call duties as per Hospital policy.
- Availability during emergencies and high-risk deliveries.
- Work primarily in the NICU, Labour Room, Operation Theatre, and Pediatric Department.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Quality of neonatal care and patient outcomes.
- Timely attendance for high-risk deliveries and emergencies.
- Compliance with NICU SOPs and infection control practices.
- Accuracy and completeness of medical documentation.
- Parent satisfaction and effective communication.
- Participation in quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits.
- Training and supervision of RMOs and nursing staff.
