Position Title: Construction Laborer

Department: Wastewater Treatment Plant

Pay: $28.76/hour ($29.01 after 90 days)

Status: Full time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, repair, and maintenance work in support of the City of Terre Haute Wastewater Utility's collection system. Assists with the installation, repair, and replacement of sewer infrastructure, concrete work, and related construction projects while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities The following duties are representative of the work performed. This list is not intended to be all inclusive.

- Assists with the repair, replacement, and maintenance of sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, inlets, castings, and other wastewater collection system infrastructure.
- Places, finishes, and repairs concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drive approaches, parking areas, footings, and other municipal construction projects.
- Mixes mortar and installs brick and block as required.
- Mobilizes and demobilizes construction sites, including loading, unloading, transporting, and securing equipment, materials, and traffic control devices.
- Operates construction equipment including excavators, mini excavators, backhoes, skid steers, forklifts, tractors, and other equipment as assigned.
- Assists with layout, formwork, grading, and installation for various construction projects.
- Performs emergency repairs and responds to after-hours service calls while participating in the department's rotating on-call schedule.
- Assists with special projects for the Wastewater Utility and other City departments.
- Establishes safe work zones using signs, barricades, barrels, arrow boards,



flagging operations, and other traffic control devices.
- Reads and interprets construction plans, safety procedures, operating instructions, and technical documents.
- Prepares routine reports and documentation as required.
- Maintains tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean and safe operating condition.
- Interacts professionally and courteously with coworkers, contractors, and members of the public.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

- Knowledge of general construction practices, equipment, and safety procedures.
- Ability to safely operate construction equipment and power tools.
- Ability to read and use measuring devices, including tape measures, measuring wheels, levels, transits, laser levels, and pipe lasers.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to identify and solve routine construction and maintenance problems.
- Ability to work safely in confined spaces, excavations, elevated work areas, and within public rights-of-way.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
- Working knowledge of applicable OSHA safety practices is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications Education and Training

- High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

- Previous construction, utility, or public works experience is preferred but not required.

Licenses and Certifications





- Valid Indiana driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.

Working Conditions Education and Training

- High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

- Previous construction, utility, or public works experience is preferred but not required.

Licenses and Certifications

- Valid Indiana driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment.

- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 80 pounds independently and participate in team lifts of heavier materials.
- Ability to repeatedly climb ladders, enter excavations, and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic equipment, and heavy equipment.
- Ability to perform repetitive shoveling, raking, digging, and other physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including fall protection and confined space equipment when necessary.
