Role & responsibilities
- Carpentry &
- Woodwork:
Carry out carpentry, repair, maintenance, installation, and modification work for wooden furniture, fixtures, doors, windows, partitions, and other wood-based structures across the campus.
- Furniture Repair &
- Maintenance:
Repair and maintain desks, chairs, tables, benches, cupboards, cabinets, shelves, wardrobes, wooden doors, and other institutional furniture.
- New Furniture Work: Construct and install basic wooden furniture and fixtures according to the requirements, measurements, and specifications provided by the concerned authority.
- Door &
- Window Maintenance:
Repair, adjust, install, and maintain wooden doors, windows, frames, locks, hinges, handles, and related fittings.
- Wood Cutting &
- Shaping:
Measure, cut, shape, join, and finish wood and other suitable materials using appropriate carpentry tools and equipment.
- Furniture Installation: Assemble and install furniture, shelves, cabinets, partitions, notice boards, workstations, and other wooden fixtures at designated locations.
- Routine Inspection: Regularly inspect wooden furniture, doors, windows, partitions, and other carpentry installations to identify damage, wear and tear, loose fittings, or repair requirements.
- Preventive Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance of furniture and wooden structures to extend their useful life and prevent major damage.
- Campus Maintenance: Provide carpentry support in classrooms, offices, laboratories, libraries, hostels, staff residences, conference rooms, workshops, and other institutional facilities.
- Repair of Damaged Furniture: Attend to complaints related to broken, damaged, loose, or unstable furniture and carry out necessary repairs or replacements.
- Hardware &
- Fittings:
Install and maintain hinges, handles, locks, brackets, drawer channels, screws, fasteners, and other hardware associated with furniture and wooden fixtures.
- Measurement &
- Estimation:
Take accurate measurements of furniture, doors, windows, partitions, and other carpentry requirements before commencing repair or installation work.
- Tools &
- Equipment:
Safely operate and maintain carpentry tools and equipment such as saws, drills, hammers,
chisels, measuring tools, screwdrivers, sanders, and other relevant equipment.
- Material Management: Identify the requirement for timber, plywood, laminates, hardware, adhesives, polish, paint, and other carpentry materials and inform the concerned supervisor.
- Finishing Work: Carry out basic finishing activities such as sanding, polishing, varnishing, painting, lamination, and other surface-finishing work wherever required.
- Event &
- Institutional Support:
Provide carpentry assistance during university functions, seminars, conferences, examinations, admission activities, exhibitions, and other institutional events.
- Safety &
- Cleanliness:
Follow workplace safety procedures while handling tools and materials and ensure that the work area is cleaned and restored after completion of assigned work.
- Coordination: Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, civil maintenance staff, housekeeping personnel, contractors, and other technical staff whenever combined maintenance work is required.
- Maintenance Records: Maintain basic records of repair work, furniture replacement, materials used, and maintenance activities wherever required.
- Other Assigned Duties: Perform any other carpentry, furniture maintenance, or facility-related duties assigned by the supervisor or competent authority from time to time.
Preferred candidate profile
- Candidates with relevant experience in carpentry, furniture repair, woodwork, and maintenance will be preferred.
- Prior experience in a University, College, School, Government Organization, Hospital, Hotel, Residential Complex, Commercial Building, or other institutional setup will be an added advantage.
- Should have practical knowledge of woodworking, furniture repair, installation, assembly, and maintenance.
- Must be capable of working with different materials such as wood, plywood, MDF, laminates, and other commonly used furniture materials.
- Should have valuable knowledge of measuring, cutting, drilling, joining, fitting, and finishing techniques.
- Candidates should be comfortable using common hand tools and power tools used in carpentry work.
- Should be able to repair and maintain tables, chairs, desks, benches, cupboards, cabinets, shelves, doors, windows, partitions, and other wooden fixtures.
- Candidates with experience in maintaining large-scale institutional or campus furniture infrastructure will be preferred.
- Experience in hostel, classroom, office, laboratory, library, or residential furniture maintenance will be considered an added advantage.
- Should have basic knowledge of hardware and fittings, including hinges, handles, locks, drawer channels, brackets, screws, and fasteners.
- Candidates with knowledge of polishing, varnishing, laminating, painting, and other basic finishing work will be preferred.
- Should be able to accurately take measurements and interpret basic dimensions or work specifications.
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing hands-on work, including lifting materials, standing for extended periods, bending, climbing, and working in different areas of the campus.
- Should demonstrate punctuality, discipline, reliability, and attention to detail.
- Must follow all workplace safety procedures while operating carpentry tools and equipment.
- Should have good problem-solving and practical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as effectively as part of a maintenance team will be preferred.
- Basic communication skills in Hindi and/or Gujarati would be an advantage for coordination with faculty, staff, students, and other maintenance personnel.
- Candidates should be willing to work according to institutional requirements, including providing support during events, examinations, emergencies, and other special activities when required.
- Candidates with a service-oriented attitude, good workmanship, safety awareness, and strong work ethics will be preferred.
