Responsibilities
- Backend Java Engineering Leadership: Lead and mentor a Staff Engineering Manager who oversees multiple Team Leads and their engineering squads.
- Drive architecture, design reviews, and technology decisions for Java-based microservice applications serving multiple enterprise clients.
- Establish and enforce engineering best practices-code quality, testing standards, CI/CD pipelines, and API design guidelines.
- Ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of features and enhancements across all client portfolios.
- Own talent development: performance reviews, career progression frameworks, and hiring for the engineering organisation.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the engineering teams.
- Track KPIs such as sprint velocity, density, code coverage, and deployment frequency.
- Release Management: Own the end-to-end release lifecycle-planning, scheduling, risk assessment, execution, and post-release reviews.
- Define and maintain release governance processes to ensure zero downtime deployments for client-facing microservices.
- Coordinate cross-team release readiness, including code freeze, regression sign-off, and go/no-go decisions.
- Work closely with DevOps/SRE teams to optimise CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and rollback strategies.
- Maintain release calendars and communicate proactively with stakeholders and clients on release windows and impacts.
- Drive continuous improvement in release predictability, lead time, and change failure rate.
- Client Support Operations: Oversee a dedicated support function comprising a Team Lead and two support engineers handling client-raised tickets.
- Define SLA/SLO frameworks and ensure adherence to response, resolution, and escalation timelines.
- Drive root-cause analysis (RCA) and permanent fix processes for recurring production issues.
- Establish support triage protocols, knowledge-base hygiene, and runbook documentation.
- Serve as the senior escalation point for critical P1/P2 client incidents, coordinating cross-functional resolution.
- Report on support metrics (ticket volume, MTTR, SLA compliance) to senior leadership and clients.
Skills and Experience
13+ years of overall software engineering experience with at least 5 years in engineering leadership or management roles. Strong hands-on background in Java (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, or equivalent enterprise Java frameworks). Proven experience managing multi-tiered engineering organisations (managers, team leads, and individual contributors).
Deep expertise in microservices architecture, RESTful APIs, event-driven systems, and distributed systems design. Solid experience owning or co-owning release management in a multi-client or multi-product environment. Track record of managing client-facing support operations and maintaining SLA compliance.
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes). Strong understanding of DevOps principles, CI/CD toolchains (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions), and observability stacks. Excellent stakeholder management, executive communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Experience in LLM and Agentic Engineering is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. Exposure to ITIL or other service management frameworks for support operations.
Experience with multi-tenant SaaS or client-specific managed service delivery models. Familiarity with JIRA, Confluence, or similar project and knowledge management tools.
Certifications in cloud (AWS Solutions Architect, Azure DevOps, etc.) or agile/lean frameworks (Protected, PMP, CSM).
