We are looking for a technically proficient Milling Shift Supervisor to lead our CNC milling department. This role requires a balance of strong leadership and deep technical expertise in 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling. You will be responsible for overseeing the production schedule, ensuring rigorous quality control, and mentoring a team of machinists to achieve maximum throughput and precision.
Key Responsibilities
1. Production & Workflow Oversight
- Direct shift operations to ensure production targets are met according to the master schedule.
- Allocate manpower and machine resources based on job complexity and operator skill levels.
- Monitor machine utilization and implement strategies to reduce cycle times and idle periods.
2. Technical Leadership
- Supervise the setup and operation of Vertical Machining Centers (VMC).
- Troubleshoot complex machining issues, including chatter, tool deflection, and dimensional drift.
- Validate CNC programs and provide feedback to the programming department for optimization.
3. Quality Assurance & Metrology
- Perform and approve "First Article" inspections before full production runs.
- Ensure the team correctly uses advanced metrology tools, including height gauges, bore gauges, and profile projectors.
- Collaborate with the Quality department to address any non-conformance reports (NCR) and implement corrective actions.
4. Safety & Maintenance
- Ensure all staff adhere to safety regulations, including proper use of PPE.
- Oversee daily/weekly preventative maintenance (TPM)
checks, such as coolant concentration levels and spindle lubrication.
Technical Requirements
- Machining Expertise:
- Strong background in high-speed milling and heavy-duty metal removal.
- Expertise in 4-axis (rotary) and 5-axis (simultaneous) machining strategies.
- Proficiency in interpreting complex GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols on blueprints.
Controller Proficiency:
- Mastery of Fanuc, controllers.
- Ability to perform manual G-code editing and macro adjustments at the machine.
Tooling & Work holding:
- Advanced knowledge of carbide grades, coating types, and geometry for various materials (Steel, Inconel -718, 17-4 PH SS).
- Experience with advanced work holding such as zero-point clamping systems.
Software Knowledge:
- Familiarity with CAM software (Solid CAM) to assist in troubleshooting toolpaths.
- Experience using ERP for real-time production tracking.
Qualifications & Soft Skills
- Experience: 5–8 years in a CNC milling workplace, with at least 3 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
- Education: Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
- Leadership: Proven ability to manage conflicts, conduct performance reviews, and foster a collaborative shop-floor culture.
- Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills to address technical bottlenecks under tight deadlines.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness): Maintaining target percentages for machine availability and performance.
- Rejection Rate: Keeping scrap and rework below the company threshold (e.g., <2%).
- Schedule Adherence: Delivering 100% of planned shift output.
- Safety Incidents: Zero recordable accidents during the shift.
