About the Role
We’re looking for a UX Engineer (4–6 years) to help us build, scale, and operationalize our Design System across all products (recent and legacy). Today, we have foundations and a few components in place. This role will take the system to the next level by strengthening tokens, components, accessibility, documentation, and governance, and by ensuring the system is implemented in code in a way that is scalable, consistent, and easy for product teams to adopt.
In addition to building reusable UI components, you will be responsible for defining and implementing interaction behaviors as part of the system—such as focus management, keyboard flows, motion/micro-interactions, transitions, form validation behavior, feedback patterns, and state handling—so experiences feel consistent and intuitive across products.
Responsibilities
- Build & Maintain the Coded Design System
- Build and maintain a production-ready component library (coded) aligned with the design library (Figma).
- Create scalable UI components with robust states, variants, responsiveness, and theming support.
- Implement and enforce design tokens (color, spacing,
typography, elevation, motion) in code.
- Accessibility & Quality
- Ensure all components meet accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA preferred): keyboard navigation, focus management, ARIA attributes, color contrast, screen reader support.
- Create a quality checklist and guardrails to reduce regressions.
- Documentation & Developer Experience (DX)
- Produce clear documentation: component APIs, usage guidelines, examples, do/don’t, accessibility notes.
- Improve DX through
- predictable component APIs
- consistent naming
- changelogs
- migration guides
- starter templates
- Support teams via demos, enablement sessions, and oAice hours.
Governance, Versioning & Adoption
- Establish and run governance workflows: intake → design alignment → build → review → release.
- Manage versioning and change management (semver preferred), including deprecations and migration paths.
- Drive adoption across teams with measurable milestones.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Product Designers to co-create patterns and ensure visual/interaction fidelity.
- Partner with engineers to integrate system components into products and reduce duplication.
- Participate in design reviews and implementation QA to ensure consistent UI across products.
Scale to Legacy Products
- Build strategies to adopt DS in old screens: “adopt on touch”, progressive refactor, mapping legacy UI to new components.
- Identify high-impact areas for modernization (traAic/revenue/support heavy flows).
Interaction Development & UX Behavior Standards (Core Focus)
- Own the interaction layer of the Design System: define and implement consistent UX behaviors across components and patterns.
- Build behavior-first components, not just visual UI—ensuring correct interaction for:
- focus states and focus order
- keyboard navigation and shortcuts (where applicable)
- hover/pressed/active/disabled states
- loading, empty, error, success, and warning behaviors
- validation timing and messaging behavior (inline, on blur, on submit, progressive disclosure) overlays (modal, drawer, popover): focus trap, escape handling, click-outside behavior
- Design and implement micro-interactions that improve clarity and perceived performance: smooth transitions and motion guidelines (timing, easing, reduced motion preferences) feedback animations (toast, progress, skeletons, subtle confirmations) interactive aAordances (hover cues, active states, drag handles)
- Ensure interaction patterns are consistent and scalable across: new products (default adoption) legacy products (progressive modernization and “adopt on touch”)
- Collaborate with designers to translate UX intent into interaction specs and implemented behaviors (e.g., “what happens on error”, “how does selection behave”, “how do we handle long content”).
- Create and maintain interaction specs and behavior documentation inside Storybook/docs: behavior rules, state diagrams, accessibility notes, examples, edge cases
Qualifications
- 4–6 years experience in front-end engineering or UX engineering, with demonstrated work on component libraries/design systems.
Required Skills
- Interaction & Behavioral Engineering (Required)
- Strong understanding of UX behavior design: feedback, aAordances, error prevention, progressive disclosure, consistency.
