What does a Biomedical Scientist do?

Biomedical Scientists run the laboratory analyses that diagnose disease, monitor treatment and screen populations. Day-to-day work mixes sample preparation, automated and manual lab analysis, result interpretation, quality control, equipment maintenance and reporting to clinicians. The career splits into specialist disciplines: clinical chemistry (blood biochemistry), haematology (blood disorders), microbiology (infections),



histology / cytology (tissue and cell pathology), blood transfusion (compatibility testing), and genetics (genomic analysis). All UK biomedical scientists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Analyse blood, tissue, urine and other samples for clinical diagnosis
Specialise into clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, histology or transfusion
Work across NHS pathology labs, private labs, public health labs and pharma R&D;
On UK Skilled Worker shortage list with solid NHS sponsor visa support

UK salary ranges

UK Biomedical Scientists are paid on the NHS Agenda for Change bands. Newly qualified BMSs start at Band 5 (£28,400+), progressing to specialist Band 6 within 2-3 years. Senior and advanced practitioner roles sit at Bands 7 and 8.
