(JD) Process Department – Shift Incharge
Department: Process
Designation: Shift Incharge
Reporting To: Process Head / Plant Head
Location: Plant Site
Shift: Rotational Shift
- Job Purpose To effectively manage and supervise the complete process operations during the assigned shift, ensuring safe, smooth, and efficient production as per plant standards, quality requirements, and production targets.
- Key Responsibilities
- Shift Operations
- Monitor and control all process operations during the assigned shift.
- Ensure smooth and continuous operation of the plant.
- Monitor production parameters and maintain them within prescribed limits.
- Ensure proper coordination between process, mechanical, electrical, laboratory, and other departments.
- Production Management
- Achieve daily production targets as assigned by management.
- Monitor production output, process efficiency, and material consumption.
- Identify process abnormalities and take immediate corrective action.
- Minimize production losses, downtime, and material wastage.
- Process Control
- Monitor critical process parameters and maintain required operating conditions.
- Ensure proper feeding, temperature, pressure, flow, and other relevant process parameters.
- Maintain proper records of shift production and process parameters.
- Immediately report major process deviations to the Process Head/Plant Head.
- Manpower Management
- Allocate duties to operators and workers according to operational requirements.
- Ensure adequate manpower availability during the shift.
- Monitor discipline, attendance, and performance of shift personnel.
- Guide and train operators regarding proper operating procedures.
- Safety
- Ensure strict compliance with all safety rules and procedures.
- Conduct shift-level safety briefings/toolbox talks where required.
- Ensure workers use appropriate PPE.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, accidents, near misses, and incidents to the concerned authority.
- Stop unsafe work whenever necessary to prevent injury or equipment damage.
- Equipment & Maintenance Coordination
- Monitor the operating condition of process equipment.
- Inform the mechanical/electrical maintenance team regarding breakdowns and abnormalities.
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel for timely restoration of equipment.
- Ensure proper equipment handover before and after maintenance activities.
- Quality Control
- Coordinate with the Quality/Laboratory Department for required process and product quality parameters.
- Ensure production is carried out according to specified quality standards.
- Take corrective action in case of quality deviations.
- Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain shift production reports, log sheets, checklists, and other required records.
- Prepare shift handover reports.
- Report production, breakdowns, abnormalities, manpower issues, and safety incidents to the next shift and management.
- Ensure proper communication during shift changeover.
- Housekeeping
- Ensure proper housekeeping in the process area.
- Maintain cleanliness around operating equipment, working areas, and access routes.
- Ensure waste and spillage are controlled and removed as per plant procedures.
- Emergency Handling
- Respond promptly to process emergencies and abnormal operating conditions.
- Follow established emergency procedures.
- Coordinate with relevant departments during fire, equipment failure, power failure, process upset, or other emergencies.
3. Authority
- Allocate manpower and work responsibilities within the assigned shift.
- Take immediate operational decisions within authorized limits.
- Stop unsafe operations and inform the concerned senior authority.
- Recommend corrective actions for process, manpower, safety, and operational issues.
4. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Achievement of shift/day production targets.
- Process efficiency and recovery.
- Reduction in production losses and downtime.
- Compliance with process parameters.
- Product quality performance.
- Safety compliance and reduction of incidents.
- Manpower utilization.
- Equipment availability and coordination with maintenance.
- Accuracy and timely submission of shift reports.
5. Qualification & Experience
- Qualification: Diploma/B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgy, or relevant engineering discipline.
- Experience: Relevant experience in steel, DRI, sponge iron, or similar process industries.
- Strong knowledge of plant process operations and shift management.
- Valuable leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
6. General Responsibilities The Shift Incharge shall perform any other process-related duties assigned by the Process Head/Plant Head from time to time and shall be responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and disciplined operation of the assigned shift.
