Visilant is a commercial-stage digital health company founded out of the Johns Hopkins University focused on creating and deploying accessible, AI-powered eye screening technologies to eliminate avoidable blindness. More than 1 billion people live with treatable eye diseases, yet care remains out of reach due to a shortage of eye specialists, long travel distances, and high costs, especially for rural and low-income patients.

The Role

Visilant is seeking a Lead Mobile Engineer to own the architecture and development of our flagship mobile application built with Expo/React Native.

You will be responsible for building, shipping, and evolving the mobile experience used by community health workers and clinicians to perform AI-assisted eye screening in real-world healthcare environments. This includes writing production-quality code, designing new features, improving application reliability and performance, and making key architectural decisions that shape the future of the platform.You will serve as the technical owner of Visilant's mobile platform, defining its architecture, establishing engineering best practices, and guiding the evolution of our mobile technology stack.

This role combines hands-on software development with technical ownership. You will work directly with product, clinical, and engineering teams to translate user needs into technical solutions, from defining implementation approaches and evaluating tradeoffs to coding, testing, deploying, and monitoring features in production.

Key Responsibilities****Mobile Application Development & Technical Ownership

- Design, build, test, and maintain Visilant's React Native/Expo mobile application.
- Write clean,



maintainable code and establish scalable patterns for future development.
- Debug and resolve complex issues across devices, operating systems, connectivity environments, and hardware configurations.
- Own mobile release processes, version management, and deployment workflows.
- Design resilient mobile data workflows that maintain functionality during connectivity interruptions, including secure local data handling, synchronization, upload retry mechanisms, and robust error recovery.
- Partner with product and design teams to create intuitive mobile experiences for users with varying levels of technical expertise.
- Make key technical decisions around application structure, state management, data handling, APIs, and third-party integrations.
- Independently create technical design documents outlining implementation approaches, tradeoffs, risks, and timelines.
- Collaborate with backend engineers on API design, data models, and system integration.

Healthcare Software, Security & Reliability

- Design secure approaches for handling sensitive patient data across mobile devices and cloud systems.
- Implement monitoring, logging, analytics, and testing strategies to improve reliability in production.
- Support healthcare interoperability efforts, including integrations with EHR/EMR systems.




- Contribute to software development practices aligned with healthcare and medical device standards (e.g., ISO 13485, IEC 62304).

Web & Platform Development

- Contribute to React-based web applications used by clinicians, administrators, and program managers.
- Build reusable components and frontend patterns across mobile and web platforms.
- Support integrations between mobile applications, backend services, AI systems, and healthcare platforms.

Ideal Candidate Profile****Technical Expertise

- Strong understanding of API design, asynchronous data flows, and performance optimization
- 4+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience building and shipping production mobile applications.
- Robust proficiency in React Native, Expo, TypeScript, and modern mobile development workflows.
- Demonstrated experience independently developing and maintaining a mobile application used by real users.
- Strong understanding of mobile application architecture, state management, networking, performance optimization, and debugging.

Systems & Product Thinking

- Ability to take an ambiguous user need and independently develop a technical approach.
- Experience writing technical design documents and communicating architectural decisions.
- Strong understanding of tradeoffs between user experience, reliability, security, and engineering complexity.

Healthcare Experience

- Experience building software in healthcare, digital health, medical devices, or other regulated industries.
- Understanding of healthcare data privacy, security, and compliance requirements.
