About Persistence :
Persistence is building the infrastructure for the next generation of AI-powered voice interactions.
Our platform enables businesses to build, deploy, and scale human-like AI voice agents for customer support, sales, scheduling, and operational workflows.
We combine real-time speech recognition, natural language understanding, and low-latency voice interactions to make AI-powered conversations feel natural and useful. Persistence integrates with business systems and communication channels to help companies automate conversations and operate customer-facing workflows 24/7.
We're an early-stage, fast-moving team building the product from the ground up where engineering decisions have a direct impact on what customers experience.
The Role :
We're not looking for someone to simply build React screens. We're looking for a Frontend Engineer who can help define how users interact with an AI voice platform.
You'll work on the interfaces through which customers configure, operate, monitor, and improve their AI agents. You'll turn complex backend workflows and real-time systems into interfaces that feel simple, fast, and intuitive.
You'll own meaningful frontend problems end-to-end - from architecture and implementation to performance, polish, and production.
This is a role for an engineer who enjoys building rather than maintaining, has strong frontend fundamentals, and wants significant ownership over the product.
What You'll Own :
1.
Build the Product :
- Build and ship production-grade web experiences using React and TypeScript.
- Own features end-to-end - understand the problem, work with product and backend teams, make technical decisions, ship, and iterate.
- Translate complex product and engineering requirements into easy, intuitive user experiences.
- Build reusable components and frontend patterns that allow the product to scale without accumulating unnecessary complexity.
2.
Build for Performance :
- Treat frontend performance as an engineering problem, not an afterthought.
- Identify and eliminate unnecessary renders, expensive computations, large bundles, and inefficient network requests.
- Use techniques such as lazy loading, code splitting, memoization, virtualization, and efficient rendering where they genuinely improve the product.
- Build interfaces that remain responsive as the product, data, and user workflows become more complex.
3.
Build the Architecture :
- Design scalable frontend architecture and establish patterns that make the codebase easier to evolve.
- Use React Hooks, Context API, and React Query / TanStack Query appropriately for client and server state.
- Work closely with backend engineers to design clean API integrations and reliable frontend data flows.
- Contribute to technical decisions around component architecture, state management, performance, testing, and developer experience.
4.
Build the Experience :
- Work closely with product and design to turn ideas into polished, production-ready experiences.
- Care about the details - loading states, error handling, responsiveness, accessibility, interactions, empty states, and edge cases.
- Think beyond does it work? and ask does this feel good to use?
What We're Looking For :
We're looking for someone with strong frontend engineering fundamentals, not someone who has simply spent 35 years writing React components.
You should have
- 35 years of professional frontend engineering experience building production applications.
- Strong hands-on experience with React.
- Strong understanding of JavaScript / TypeScript fundamentals, including asynchronous programming, browser behavior, promises, event handling, and modern language features.
- Deep understanding of React Hooks, Context API, component composition, and frontend architecture.
- Hands-on experience with React Query / TanStack Query or a comparable server-state management solution.
- Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, responsive design, and browser fundamentals.
- Experience working with REST APIs and asynchronous data flows.
- Practical experience diagnosing and improving frontend performance.
- Ability to independently take a feature from problem - technical approach - implementation - production.
- Strong engineering judgment - knowing when to keep things simple and when a problem genuinely requires a more sophisticated solution.
You'll Stand Out If :
- You've worked on a product company / SaaS / consumer product rather than primarily building client projects.
- You've worked in an early-stage startup where you had to make decisions without a large engineering organization around you.
- You've worked with Next.js.
- You've built or contributed to design systems or component libraries.
- You have experience with Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, or similar testing tools.
- You've worked on products involving real-time data, streaming interfaces, WebSockets, voice, AI, or other latency-sensitive experiences.
- You have a strong product sense and naturally think about UX, not just implementation.
What We Care About More Than the Checklist :
1.
You Own Problems :
- You don't need a ticket for every step. When something is broken, ambiguous, or inefficient, you investigate it, understand the trade-offs, and drive it toward a solution.
2.
You Think in Systems :
- You don't just ask, How do I build this component? You think about how the component, state, API, performance, architecture, and user experience fit together.
3.
You Care About the Details :
- The difference between a functional product and a great product is often in the details. You notice them.
4.
You Move Fast :
- We're an early-stage company. We value engineers who can make good decisions quickly, ship, learn, and iterate - without sacrificing engineering quality.
5.
You Build for Users :
- The goal isn't to write more code. The goal is to build something customers love using.
Why Persistence? :
- Build at the intersection of AI + product + engineering.
- Work on a product category that is fundamentally changing how businesses interact with customers.
- Own meaningful pieces of the product. Your decisions won't disappear into a large organization. What you build will directly shape the product.
- Work close to the core engineering team. You'll collaborate directly with backend engineers, product, and leadership to solve problems from first principles.
- Solve interesting frontend problems. AI-powered workflows, real-time interactions, complex state, performance, scalable architecture, and polished UX.
- Build, ship, learn. Short feedback loops, high ownership, and the opportunity to see your work reach customers quickly.
This Role Is For You If :
- You enjoy taking a blank page and turning it into a production product.
- You care about how software feels, not just whether it works.
- You can discuss React architecture and browser performance in the same conversation as product UX.
- And you're excited by the idea of joining a small team where the code you write today can shape the product for years to come.
