Position: Attending Consultant / Associate Consultant Critical Care
Department: Critical Care
Reporting To: Senior Consultant / Director Critical Care
Experience
35 years of post-MD/DNB experience in Critical Care within a reputed multi-specialty or tertiary care hospital.
Qualification
- MD/DNB in Anaesthesia, Internal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or equivalent.
- Fellowship/DM/DNB in Critical Care Medicine (preferred).
- Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC)/State Medical Council.
Job Summary The Attending/Associate Consultant – Critical Care is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based critical care services to critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The incumbent will manage complex medical emergencies, coordinate multidisciplinary care, perform critical care procedures, and ensure patient safety while maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients admitted to the ICU.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on evidence-based clinical protocols.
- Perform comprehensive daily patient rounds and document clinical findings accurately.
- Monitor and manage patients requiring advanced organ support, including mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, renal replacement therapy, and invasive monitoring.
- Perform bedside critical care procedures such as:
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Arterial line placement
- Endotracheal intubation
- Percutaneous tracheostomy (where credentialed)
- Chest tube insertion
- Ultrasound-guided procedures
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, code blue events, and rapid response team activations.
- Ensure timely referrals and collaborate with specialists for multidisciplinary patient management.
Patient Care & Quality
- Maintain adherence to ICU clinical protocols,
infection prevention guidelines, and patient safety standards.
- Communicate effectively with patients' families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plans.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Participate in mortality and morbidity meetings, quality audits, and clinical governance initiatives.
- Promote antibiotic stewardship and rational use of critical care resources.
Academic & Research
- Participate in CMEs, journal clubs, departmental academic sessions, and case presentations.
- Contribute to clinical research, publications, and quality improvement projects.
- Mentor junior doctors, residents, fellows, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with NABH/NABL and hospital quality standards.
- Participate in ICU duty rosters and provide emergency coverage as required.
- Support implementation of departmental policies, SOPs, and clinical pathways.
- Coordinate with nursing, respiratory therapy, laboratory, radiology, and other support departments for seamless patient care.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Robust clinical expertise in Critical Care Medicine.
- Excellent knowledge of ventilator management and advanced life support.
- Expertise in managing sepsis, shock, ARDS, trauma, and multi-organ failure.
- Proficiency in invasive bedside procedures.
- Sound clinical decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments.
- Team-oriented with a patient-centric approach.
- Commitment to continuous learning and clinical excellence.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in managing Medical, Surgical, Cardiac, Neuro, and Trauma ICU patients.
- Exposure to ECMO, CRRT, bronchoscopy, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and advanced hemodynamic monitoring will be an added advantage.
- Experience working in NABH-accredited hospitals.
