Why This Role Exists
As automation moves from experimentation to a core operating capability, execution increasingly breaks down due to:
- Poorly framed problems
- One-off, non-reusable solutions
- Delivery dependent on individual senior bandwidth
This role exists to institutionalize technical rigor, speed, and outcome ownership—so automation becomes repeatable, scalable, and compounding.
Primary responsibilities:
1. Process Re-engineering & Outcome Ownership
- Own the portfolio of automation initiatives across planning, finance, supply chain, operations, HR, and omni
- Deconstruct complex processes into rules, states, flows, and exception paths
- Drive interventions that remove days from business cycles, not just automate tasks
2. Technology Discovery & Hands-on Experimentation
- Continuously evaluate and experiment with:
- Automation and workflow platforms
- AI-assisted development, agents, and copilots
- Prompt-driven workflows and emerging “vibe coding” patterns
- Run focused POCs to validate feasibility, performance, and impact
- Form strong technical conviction on the most effective approaches for scale
3. Automation Product & Platform Leadership
- Act as product owner for the internal automation platform
- Define reusable building blocks, patterns, and standards
- Ensure automation design emphasizes modularity, testability, and reuse
- Guide evolution of the platform based on real process needs and outcomes
4. Vendor & Ecosystem Stewardship
- Lead structured evaluation, piloting,
and scaling of solution providers
- Ensure architectural fit, integration quality, and operational readiness
- Maintain a disciplined approach to selection, adoption, and long-term performance
5. Decision, Pilot & Rollout Leadership
- Drive evidence-based decisions through structured decision packs
- Design and oversee pilots with transparent KPIs, timelines, and budgets
- Own go/no-go decisions and clean closure
- Lead UAT, rollout, and adoption in partnership with business teams
6. Team Leadership & Scale (APMs)
- Lead and mentor Assistant Product Managers (APMs)
- Set standards for:
- Problem abstraction
- Modular automation design
- Test-case-driven delivery
- Review and elevate outputs to ensure engineer- and vendor-ready quality
- Build a culture of speed, clarity, and technical curiosity
7. Operating System & Visibility
- Build and maintain centralized repositories for:
- Problems, evaluations, pilots, and decisions
- Provide leadership dashboards tracking:
- Days saved
- Cycle-time compression
- Reuse and compounding impact
- Ensure traceability and institutional memory across initiatives
What Success Looks Like
- Material reduction in end-to-end cycle times across priority processes
- Hundreds of net business days eliminated annually
- Faster delivery of similar automations through reuse and standardization
- APMs operating independently within a clear execution framework
- Automation outcomes no longer dependent on individual heroes
