About Varaha
Varaha is the largest carbon removal developer in Asia, working with more than 200,000 smallholder farmers. Trusted by brands like Google and Microsoft, we combine an exceptional team with deeply impactful work. Through regenerative agriculture, afforestation, and biochar, our projects remove carbon while simultaneously restoring soils, protecting biodiversity, and improving livelihoods far beyond our project boundaries. We are a profitable, rapidly growing company backed by premier global private equity and top-tier venture capital. Our roots are in India, and our impact is global.
The Opportunity
Varaha runs the largest smallholder soil carbon project in the world and has closed the largest regenerative agriculture deals in the market. Behind that sits a measurement stack built on multiple bio-geo-chemical models, remote sensing, and machine learning, calibrated against physical soil samples from the field by a world-class science team. Buyers, auditors, and funders all want the same thing from it: a clear, sourced account of what we measured and why it holds.
You are the commercial teams technical authority on regenerative agriculture and afforestation, and the person who turns several hundred thousand hectares of fieldwork into documents a Chief Sustainability Officer can act on. Regenerative agriculture comes first. Afforestation and reforestation follow.
We are deliberately open on background. Agronomists from agri-conglomerates, people who have run contract farming or sustainable sourcing programmes at scale, agri-input and agri-tech technical leads, remote sensing specialists, and programme leads who have delivered smallholder work across large geographies all fit. What matters is that you have stood in a field, know what the data from it can and cannot support, and write clearly.
Reporting To: CCO
Key Responsibilities
- Answer buyer and auditor diligence.
Sort what you can answer now from what needs expert input, then produce the response with sources, assumptions, and the limits of the claim stated.
- Sit in on sales calls. You explain the measurement, the project, and the impact directly to the client. The project team stays on the projects.
- Run our side of ratings and verification. Prepare submissions, handle analyst and auditor questions, and push back with evidence where a finding is wrong.
- Build the answer library so the same question is never answered from scratch twice and our language stays consistent across proposals, contracts, and project documents.
- Create what is missing. Method summaries, appendices, diagrams, data summaries, and operating procedures, wherever a gap is holding up a deal.
- Turn data into claims. Read agronomy datasets and remote sensing outputs and convert them into short statements we can defend in front of a buyer.
- Cover the impact side. Farmer and community outcomes weigh as heavily with buyers as the carbon itself. You build the evidence base on incomes, livelihoods, and co-benefits across 200,000+ smallholders, work with what the field data supports when it is limited, and state where it is thin.
- Guide the commercial team on presenting technical content accurately, and train them to handle the straightforward questions themselves.
Qualifications
- 4-10 years working on agriculture, agroforestry, or land use, ideally involving smallholder farmers in Asia or Africa.
- Technical writing that has survived outside scrutiny. Project documents, monitoring reports, diligence responses, or funding proposals. Please send samples.
- A working grasp of the fundamentals that decide whether a carbon project is credible: baselines, additionality, permanence, leakage, and buffer pools. If you know these from an adjacent field, say so and we will look at it.
- Comfort with soil carbon or biomass measurement, sampling design, and the monitoring that sits around it.
- Ability to work with agronomy data and remote sensing outputs directly.
- Skilled at using AI tools to digest dense material and produce strong first drafts fast.
- Written English at a standard that holds in front of international buyers.
- Commercial judgement. Perks, costs, and risks presented without inflation.
- Structured habits: clean intake, targeted questions to experts, careful citation, and documents you can find again.
Preferred
- Experience with any carbon standard, including direct auditor interaction. Not required.
- Grant or concessional funding proposals with results you can point to.
- Writing operating procedures for field protocols and quality control.
- Confident enough on a call to lead a session with a US or European buyer alone.
Why This Role Matters
Nature-based carbon has a credibility problem across the industry, and much of it comes down to how the work is explained. Varahas measurement is among the strongest in the sector. Making that legible to buyers and funders moves capital toward 200,000 smallholder land stewards who are already doing the work.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity through ESOPs.
- The first seat in this function. You define how it works.
- Direct exposure to the largest corporate carbon buyers in the world.
- Support for learning and professional development.
- A culture of undogmatic, unbureaucratic creativity and collaboration.
