Machine setters, also known as machine operators or machinists, are responsible for setting up and operating machinery to ensure effective production. Some of their responsibilities include:

- Setting up machines: Configuring machines based on job requirements
- Operating machines: Running machines during production
- Maintaining machines: Cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts
- Inspecting workpieces: Checking for defects and measuring to ensure accuracy
- Reading blueprints: Determining product specifications and tooling instructions
- Positioning workpieces: Securing workpieces in chucks, fixtures, or automatic feeding mechanisms
- Adjusting machine controls: Setting rotation speeds,



depth of cut, and stroke
- Repositioning workpieces: Moving workpieces during production
- Instructing operators: Teaching operators how to safely operate the machine
- Producing initial batch of goods: Starting and stopping machines to produce the first batch of goods
- Removing finished products: Removing finished products from the machine

Machine setters often need a high school diploma, but computer numerically controlled machine tool programmers may need additional coursework. They should also have attention to detail, dependability, and self-control.
