Job Description: A Head of Steel Melting Shop (SMS) for a steel manufacturing company manages end-to-end production operations, including furnaces (EAF/Induction), Ladle Refining Furnaces (LRF), and Continuous Casting Machines (CCM) to maximize yield and efficiency. The role requires optimizing charge-mix, controlling production costs, ensuring quality standards, maintaining safety compliance, and leading teams to achieve daily targets. Key Responsibilities

- Production Management: Oversee daily SMS operations to meet production targets regarding quality, quantity, and deadlines.
- Process Optimization: Reduce tap-to-tap time, optimize charge mix (sponge iron, scrap, ferroalloys), and improve yield and productivity.
- Quality Control: Ensure produced steel meets chemical consistency and temperature specifications, utilizing RCA (Root Cause Analysis) for improvements.
- Maintenance Coordination: Collaborate with maintenance to minimize downtime on furnaces, cranes, and CCM.




- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety (EHS) standards, environmental regulations, and legal compliances.
- Team Leadership: Lead and train engineers, supervisors, and shop floor staff.

Required Skills and Qualifications

- Experience: Typically 15+ years in SMS operations within a steel plant, often with 3–5 years in a leadership role (e.g., Head - Steel Melting Shop (15-25 yrs), SMS Head - Exemplar Global - 15 to 24 years of experience).
- Education: B.E./B.Tech in Metallurgical or Mechanical Engineering.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficient in Induction Furnace, EAF, LRF, and CCM operations.
- Leadership: Solid ability to manage large teams and drive operational excellence.
