Introduction
At IBM Software, we transform client challenges into solutions. Building the world’s leading AI-powered, cloud-native products that shape the future of business and society. Our legacy of innovation creates endless opportunities for IBMers to learn, grow, and make an impact on a global scale.
Working in Software means joining a team fueled by curiosity and collaboration. You’ll work with diverse technologies, partners, and industries to design, develop, and deliver solutions that power digital transformation. With a culture that values innovation, growth, and continuous learning, IBM Software places you at the heart of IBM’s product and technology landscape.
Here, you’ll have the tools and opportunities to advance your career while creating software that changes the world.
Your role and responsibilities
About the Role The CP charter keeps expanding, and we are looking for a strong engineer to help carry that growth forward. You will own meaningful, well-scoped parts of the roadmap - strengthening our quality gates, hardening security, improving release engineering, or leveling up monitoring and management - and see your work through from design to production.
You will partner closely with senior engineers and adjacent teams, participate in customer on-call, and grow into the go-to expert for your area of the platform.
What You Will Do
● Design, build, and operate services and tooling that support one or more parts of the CP charter (release engineering, readiness, deploy, security, or monitoring and management).
● Own medium-to-large features end to end: design, implementation, testing, rollout, and iteration.
● Contribute to CP Readiness improvements - for example, automatically quarantining flaky tests, porting integration test infrastructure onto Kubernetes, or automating new OS certification.
● Help scale CP Monitoring & Management to handle larger fleets of customer clusters with better performance.
● Participate in CP on-call rotations,
debugging and mitigating customer-impacting issues through careful log and metrics analysis.
● Review code and designs from peers, raising the technical bar for the team.
● Collaborate with product management and adjacent Confluent and Confluent Cloud teams on cross-team initiatives.
● Mentor junior engineers and help onboard new team members.
Confluent Platform
Confluent Platform’s mission is to deliver a best-in-class, full-scale data streaming platform for any BYOI (Bring Your Own Infra) setup - from a developer’s laptop to private cloud infrastructure. Confluent is the leader in data-in-motion, and CP brings that experience to private cloud and the open-source community. CP generates roughly 50% of Confluent’s revenue.
The Team: The CP team is based out of India (established 2023) and is made up of the following sub-teams:
● Build & Release - Release engineering across 130+ repositories, delivering native RPM installs, Java archives, and optimized Docker images.
● CP Readiness - The "Customer Zero" quality gate; builds the tooling, DSLs, and frameworks used across Confluent to validate implementations before they reach customer production.
● CP Deploy - Last-mile deployment automation (Ansible, Kubernetes/CFK) enabling zero-downtime installs and upgrades.
● CP Security - AuthN/AuthZ, OAuth, mTLS and compliance protocols for regulated customers in Finserv, Telecom, Insurance, and Banking.
● CP Monitoring & Management - fleet health, RBAC, and Confluent Control Center across customers’ multi-geography cluster deployments.
● Gateway - Self managed high performance Kafka proxy products to help migrate customers to CP or CC, provide governance, DR and external sharing capabilities.
Required technical and professional expertise
● 7+ years of hands-on software development experience, including building and operating production systems at scale.
● Solid understanding of systems fundamentals (disk, network, operating systems) and experience running services in the cloud.
● Working knowledge of distributed systems design; comfortable with concurrent and multi-threaded programming.
● A self-starter who can spot the symptoms of a technical issue, reason about the root cause, and drive it to resolution.
● Able to ship reliably, trade off short-term delivery against long-term system health, and iterate in increments.
● A clear communicator, comfortable walking peers and stakeholders through technical trade-offs.
● Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience; pragmatic about picking the right technology for the job.
● Willing to take customer-facing on-call shifts and debug production issues under time pressure.
What’s a Deal-Breaker for Us
● Solid design instincts without the willingness to get hands-on and implement - this is very much a coding role.
● Prioritizing individual wins over team and CP-wide goals.
● Needing a fully specified list of requirements rather than engaging with open-ended problems.
