Storming Universe is looking for a Flight Controls & GNC Engineer to support the modelling, development, tuning, testing and flight-readiness of control systems for our fixed-wing unmanned aircraft.

The engineer will work across aircraft flight dynamics, control-law development, guidance, navigation, state estimation, simulation, autopilot tuning and flight-test analysis.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop mathematical models of fixed-wing aircraft.
- Develop longitudinal and lateral-directional state-space models.
- Analyse aircraft static and dynamic stability.
- Evaluate aircraft modes including short-period, phugoid, Dutch-roll, roll and spiral modes.
- Develop and tune flight-control laws for attitude, angular rate, airspeed, altitude, heading and navigation.
- Work with PID, state-space, LQR or other suitable control methods.
- Develop gain schedules for different airspeeds, altitudes, payloads, aircraft masses and centre-of-gravity conditions.
- Model actuator dynamics, delays, saturation and rate limits.
- Support state estimation, sensor fusion and navigation algorithms.
- Work with Kalman Filters and Extended Kalman Filters where required.
- Develop and validate aircraft simulations using MATLAB and Simulink.
- Perform Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
- Configure and tune PX4 or ArduPilot for fixed-wing aircraft.
- Analyse flight-controller and flight-test logs.
- Conduct system identification using simulation and flight-test data.

- Compare aircraft simulation results with actual flight behaviour and update the model accordingly.
- Support aircraft ground testing, taxi testing, first-flight preparation and progressive flight-envelope expansion.
- Work closely with avionics, mechanical, structural and flight-test engineers.

Candidate Requirements Candidates should have a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics or a related field, with solid knowledge of aircraft dynamics and control systems.

Strong knowledge of the following is highly desirable:

- MATLAB and Simulink
- Aircraft flight dynamics
- State-space modelling
- Control-system design
- PID control and tuning
- PX4 or ArduPilot
- Fixed-wing stability and control

Experience with transfer functions, Bode analysis, stability margins, LQR, Kalman filtering, system identification and flight-data analysis will be considered an advantage. Experience with fixed-wing UAVs, flight-control development, GNSS/INS, sensor fusion, SIL/HIL testing, JSBSim, FlightGear, Gazebo or similar simulation environments is preferred.

Candidates with PX4 or ArduPilot experience should ideally be comfortable with fixed-wing tuning, controller behaviour, log analysis and flight-control integration, rather than only basic parameter configuration.

We are looking for a hands-on engineer who can connect control theory, simulation and real aircraft behaviour and support the aircraft from modelling and tuning through ground testing and flight testing.
