Position Purpose
The Fleet Performance & Cost Controller is responsible for independently monitoring the commercial and operational performance of every truck and trailer in the TJL fleet. The role converts daily fleet activity into asset-level profitability information and identifies revenue leakage, excessive costs, under-utilisation, and the root causes of missed trips or downtime.
The Controller will maintain a mini profit-and-loss view for each asset and provide management with daily exceptions, weekly performance reviews, and monthly fleet profitability rankings.
Key Responsibilities
- Asset-level profitability: Maintain revenue, direct cost, contribution, and profitability records for every truck and, where relevant, trailer.
- Revenue control: Verify trips completed, tonnage, route, client, rate, revenue earned, and revenue per truck/day/month.
- Trip performance: Compare target trips against actual trips and quantify the financial impact of every shortfall.
- Fuel control: Monitor litres issued, fuel cost, km/litre, fuel cost per trip,
and fuel cost per tonne; flag abnormal consumption.
- Driver cost and productivity: Track salary, trip allowance, bonuses, penalties, absenteeism, and driver-related lost utilisation.
- Maintenance control: Capture parts, labour, outsourced repair costs, frequency of breakdowns, and maintenance cost per kilometre.
- Tyre control: Monitor tyre consumption, tyre life, and tyre cost per kilometre by asset.
- Compliance cost: Track insurance, licences, permits, inspections, and compliance-related downtime.
- Downtime control: Record every non-productive day/hour and assign a explicit reason code such as workshop, no driver, licence issue, client delay, breakdown, or operational planning.
- Exception reporting: Produce a daily RED/AMBER list of assets requiring management action.
- Root-cause analysis: Separate asset problems from driver, route, client, dispatch, workshop, and commercial-rate problems.
- Data integrity: Reconcile
