Emergency Nurse – Job Roles & Responsibilities
1. Triage & Initial Assessment
- Perform rapid triage and prioritize patients based on clinical urgency.
- Assess airway, breathing, circulation, disability, and exposure (ABCDE approach).
- Record vital signs and obtain relevant medical history.
- Identify critically ill patients and initiate emergency protocols.
2. Emergency Patient Care
- Provide immediate nursing care to stabilize patients.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and oxygen therapy as prescribed.
- Initiate IV access, collect blood samples, and perform ECGs.
- Assist in managing trauma, stroke, cardiac, respiratory, and other emergency cases.
3. Emergency Procedures
- Assist physicians during emergency procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, chest tube insertion, wound suturing, and fracture management.
- Prepare and maintain sterile equipment required for emergency interventions.
- Ensure availability of emergency medications and supplies.
- Recognize clinical deterioration and escalate concerns immediately.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation and medication records in the EMR.
- Document emergency interventions and patient outcomes.
5. Resuscitation & Critical Care
- Participate actively in Code Blue and trauma response teams.
- Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as trained.
- Operate emergency equipment including defibrillators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, and ventilators.
- Assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and post-resuscitation care.
6. Infection Prevention & Patient Safety
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols.
- Adhere to medication safety practices and patient identification protocols.
- Ensure safe handling and disposal of biomedical waste.
- Maintain a clean, secure, and organized emergency care environment.
