Role Description

Project

We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the project RANGIFER: Reindeer antler and outland connectivity in Viking-age Europe. This ambitious initiative explores Viking-Age trade, resource exploitation, and cultural connectivity across Europe by analyzing the raw materials used to craft one of the era’s most ubiquitous artifacts: the hair comb.

As the PDRA on this project, you will travel to museum collections across Europe to sample antler and bone combs, analyze them using proteomic techniques (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS), and LC-MS/MS),



and contribute to the presentation and publication of results in academic and public fora.

Role

We are looking for an outstanding research associate to drive forward the analytical programme that is central to the project. In particular, they will be responsible for the application to artefactual material of ZooMS and LC-MS/MS analyses (minimally destructive techniques for the identification of species in animal products). The successful applicant will conduct this research under the supervision of senior colleagues, and contribute to the production of outputs.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include coordinating and undertaking international research trips, principally for the purpose of sampling objects held in museums across Europe. They will need to liaise with museum curators and conservators to organise these trips, before ethically and sensitively sampling Viking-Age combs and comb-making waste from museum collections.
