Job Summary:
The Freight Broker is responsible for sourcing freight, developing relationships with shippers and carriers, negotiating competitive transportation rates, coordinating shipments from pickup to delivery, and resolving transportation issues while maintaining excellent customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Find and acquire new shipper accounts through cold calling, email, referrals, and networking.
- Build and maintain relationships with shippers and carriers.
- Post available loads on load boards (DAT, Truckstop, etc.).
- Source qualified carriers for available shipments.
- Verify carrier authority, insurance, safety ratings, and compliance.
- Negotiate freight rates with both shippers and carriers.
- Prepare and send Rate Confirmations.
- Track shipments from pickup through delivery.
- Provide shipment updates to customers.
- Resolve delays, breakdowns, claims, and service issues.
- Maintain accurate shipment documentation.
- Review Bills of Lading (BOL), Proof of Delivery (POD), invoices, lumper receipts, and other paperwork.
- Invoice customers and approve carrier payments.
- Ensure FMCSA and company policy compliance.
- Meet revenue, profit margin, and customer retention goals.
- Maintain records in the Transportation Management System (TMS).
- Build a reliable carrier network for future loads.
