Role & responsibilities
Structural Design & Analysis
- Lead structural design and analysis of RCC, steel, and Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) structures for WtE plants, MSW processing facilities, tipping halls, bunkers, and ancillary infrastructure.
- Perform and review detailed structural calculations for foundations, retaining walls, slabs, frames, trusses, and equipment-supporting structures.
- Develop and review structural design basis reports, design criteria, and load calculations as per IS codes and project-specific requirements.
- Evaluate and optimise structural systems for cost efficiency, constructability, and long-term performance.
2. PEB Design & Coordination
- Define PEB design parameters, loading criteria, and interface requirements for industrial sheds, process buildings, and warehouses within WtE/MSW project scope.
- Review PEB vendor submissions including GA drawings, connection details, anchor bolt layouts, and erection sequences for technical compliance.
- Coordinate between PEB vendors and civil/structural teams to ensure seamless interface between PEB superstructure and RCC substructure.
- Evaluate and approve PEB shop drawings and resolve design deviations during fabrication and erection stages.
3. Drawing Production & Documentation
- Oversee production of structural General Arrangement (GA) drawings, reinforcement detailing, and fabrication drawings using STAAD.Pro, ETABS, and AutoCAD.
- Review and approve structural drawings issued for construction (IFC), ensuring completeness, coordination, and compliance.
- Maintain structured design documentation including calculation packages, drawing registers, revision histories, and technical submittals.
- Prepare and review method statements for critical structural works including deep foundations, large pours, and steel erection.
4. Design Coordination & Multidisciplinary Integration
- Coordinate structural design with civil, mechanical, electrical, and process engineering disciplines to resolve interface conflicts and ensure design coherence.
- Review and integrate vendor drawings, equipment loads,
and process requirements into the structural design.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design review meetings and lead structural technical reviews and peer checks.
- Manage clash detection and design change management processes across project phases.
5. Consultant & Vendor Management
- Manage external structural design consultants, review their deliverables, and ensure alignment with project scope, schedule, and quality standards.
- Evaluate and shortlist structural material vendors and fabricators; review technical bids and provide recommendations.
- Track design deliverable schedules from consultants and vendors; proactively manage delays and technical hold points.
6. Site Support & Construction Engineering
- Provide technical support to site teams during construction including RFI responses, design clarifications, and site instruction documentation.
- Review and approve shop drawings, construction method statements, and temporary works designs submitted by contractors.
- Conduct periodic site visits to verify structural works are executed in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.
- Assist in investigation and resolution of structural non-conformances, deviations, and construction defects.
7. Code Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure all structural designs comply with relevant IS codes (IS 456, IS 800, IS 875, IS 1893, IS 2911, etc.) and project-specific specifications.
- Establish and enforce design quality procedures including calculation checks, drawing reviews, and independent verification.
- Participate in internal and third-party design audits; respond to technical queries from statutory and regulatory bodies.
8. Client & Stakeholder Interface
- Serve as the structural engineering point of contact for clients, presenting design solutions, addressing technical queries, and managing design approval workflows.
- Prepare and present technical reports, design summaries, and structural assessments to client and project management teams.
- Support the preparation of design-related submissions for environmental clearances, statutory approvals, and third-party certifications.
9. Innovation & Value Engineering
- Identify value engineering opportunities in structural systems to reduce material cost and construction time without compromising safety or performance.
- Evaluate alternative structural solutions and materials including precast, modular, and composite systems — suited to WtE project requirements.
- Stay current with advances in structural engineering software, materials, and construction methods relevant to industrial and waste management projects.
10. Team Leadership & Mentoring
- Lead and mentor a team of junior and mid-level structural engineers, providing technical direction, review support, and career guidance.
- Set design standards, review protocols, and drawing conventions for the structural engineering team.
Skills & Competencies
- Expert-level proficiency in structural analysis and design software: STAAD.Pro, ETABS, SAP2000, and SAFE.
- Strong command of AutoCAD for structural drawing production and review; working knowledge of Tekla Structures or PDMS is an advantage.
- In-depth knowledge of IS codes for RCC, steel, seismic, wind, and foundation design.
- Comprehensive understanding of PEB structural systems, design standards, and vendor coordination processes.
- Proven ability to manage multiple design packages simultaneously across project phases.
- Solid client-facing communication skills with the ability to present complex structural concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in design of structures for WtE, MSW, or heavy industrial environments is highly desirable.
- Effective leadership, mentoring, and cross-disciplinary coordination capabilities.
