Role Summary:

The Apigee Administrator / Engineer (L1) is responsible for day-to-day operations, monitoring, troubleshooting, and support of Apigee APIs hosted on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This role manages GCP infrastructure using Terraform, ensuring API gateway reliability, security, and performance across enterprise application integrations. The incumbent drives infrastructure-as-code best practices, maintains CI/CD pipelines, and ensures platform stability through proactive monitoring

and swift incident resolution.

Real-Time Responsibilities:

- Monitor Apigee API traffic, latency, error rates, and backend health using Cloud Monitoring and Apigee Analytics.
- Troubleshoot API failures including 4xx/5xx errors, authentication issues, token validation failures, and backend timeouts.
- Provision and manage GCP infrastructure (VPCs, subnets, firewall rules, load balancers, Cloud DNS) using Terraform.
- Maintain and version Terraform modules for Apigee X / Hybrid environments including environment groups, instances, and peering.
- Support application integrations across enterprise platforms and third-party API consumers.
- Investigate and resolve production incidents impacting API consumers and backend services.
- Perform API proxy deployments, revisions, rollbacks, and configuration updates through CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps / Cloud Build).
- Analyse API traces, Cloud Logging, and distributed traces to identify root causes and restore services within SLA timelines.
- Configure and manage API security policies including OAuth 2.0, JWT, API Keys, Spike Arrest, Quota, and mTLS.
- Manage SSL/TLS certificate renewals, keystores, trust stores, and GCP Certificate Manager configurations.




- Manage Terraform state files, remote backends (GCS), and enforce Terraform plan/apply approval workflows.
- Coordinate with application, security, networking, and vendor teams during incident resolution.
- Support change requests, maintenance activities, and production releases following ITSM processes.
- Create Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports and implement preventive measures for recurring issues.
- Monitor API consumption trends and GCP resource utilization; recommend performance and cost optimizations.
- Participate in on-call support and major incident management activities. Typical Real-Time Scenarios Handled

- 1 Apigee API proxy returning 500 errors due to backend GCP service failures or mis configured target server endpoints.
- 2 OAuth token validation failures preventing client authentication traced via Apigee trace and Cloud Logging.
- 3 Terraform apply failures during infrastructure provisioning state lock issues, resource drift, or permission errors.
- 4 Apigee environment group or instance misconfiguration after a Terraform change causing routing failures.
- 5 APIs experiencing high latency due to GCP load balancer misconfigurations or backend autoscaling delays.
- 6 Expired SSL certificates causing API connectivity disruptions managed via GCP Certificate Manager.
- 7 Sudden spikes in API traffic requiring Spike Arrest and Quota policy tuning to protect backends.
- 8 CI/CD pipeline failures during Apigee proxy or Terraform deployment rollback and RCA required.
- 9 GCP VPC peering or firewall rule changes breaking Apigee-to-backend connectivity.




- 10 API deployment drift between environments detected Terraform plan showing unintended infrastructure changes.

Required Technical Skills:

Key Competencies:

- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for production API and GCP infrastructure incidents.
- Proficiency in writing, reviewing, and maintaining Terraform modules and configuration files.
- Ability to work under pressure during critical outages with strict SLA timelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication for RCA documentation and cross-team coordination.
- Proactive mindset to identify infrastructure drift, performance bottlenecks, and cost optimizations.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse teams: application, security, networking, and DevOps.

Experience Requirements:

- 3 6 years of overall IT experience in API management, GCP infrastructure, or platform engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience supporting Apigee X or Apigee Hybrid in production
- environments.
- Hands-on experience with Terraform for provisioning and managing GCP resources.
- Familiarity with GCP services: Compute Engine, Cloud Run, GKE, VPC, Cloud DNS, Load Balancing,
- Cloud Armor.
- Experience with CI/CD tools ( Azure DevOps, or Google Cloud Build) for automated deployments.
- Preferred Certifications
- HashiCorp Terraform Associate Certification.
- Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer.

- Participation in on-call rotation for 24x7 production support coverage.
- Adherence to ITSM processes for incident, problem, and change management.
- Ability to participate in scheduled and emergency maintenance activities during off-hours.
