Job Summary:
We're seeking an experienced Java Lead to lead the modernization and migration of legacy
applications to modern Java-based platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong
technical background, experience with modernization and migration projects, and excellent
problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the assessment, analysis, and documentation of existing legacy Java applications to
identify technical debt, performance bottlenecks, and security vulnerabilities.
- Design and champion the future-state cloud-native architecture, including
microservices, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and API-first design.
- Evaluate and select the right technology stack for modernization (e.g., Spring Boot,
Quarkus, cloud providers - AWS/Azure/GCP), data migration strategies, and CI/CD
tools.
- Define and enforce coding standards, best practices, and non-functional
requirements (performance, security, reliability).
- Lead by example by writing clean, scalable, and well-tested code for critical
components of the new system.
- Actively participate in the migration process, which may include strategies like
Strangler Fig Pattern, lift-and-shift, or complete rewrite.
- Perform and guide complex code refactoring, database schema modernization, and
API decomposition.
- Own the end-to-end technical delivery of the modernization roadmap.
- Mentor, coach, and grow a team of backend and full-stack engineers, fostering a
culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Manage task allocation, sprint planning, and technical dependencies within an
Agile/Scrum environment.
- Facilitate knowledge sharing sessions on up-to-date Java technologies, cloud patterns,
and migration techniques.
- Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Business Analysts, and other
engineering teams to ensure the modernized platform meets business objectives.
- Communicate complex technical concepts, progress, and risks effectively to both
technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Work with DevOps/SRE teams to establish robust CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and
alerting for the new platform
Required Skills:
3+ years of extensive experience in Java development, with a deep understanding of the
JVM, performance tuning, and memory management.
- Proven track record of leading at least one large-scale legacy Java application
modernization, migration, or re-architecture project.
- Expert knowledge of legacy Java technologies (e.g., J2EE, Servlets, JSP, EJB, Struts)
and modern frameworks (Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Security).
- Strong experience with microservices architecture, REST APIs, and distributed
systems design patterns.
- Hands-on experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker,
Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Deep understanding of database technologies, both SQL (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and
NoSQL, and migration strategies.
- Mastery of modern software engineering practices: CI/CD (Jenkins, GitLab CI), Git,
Maven/Gradle, and Agile methodologies.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and team leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
- Experience with application servers like WebLogic, WebSphere, or JBoss.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Familiarity with reactive programming (Project Reactor) or alternative JVM
languages (Kotlin).
- Experience with domain-driven design (DDD).
- Understanding of security best practices in a microservices environment (OAuth2,
JWT).
