Job Title: lecturer /assistant professor - physics(optometry and vision science)

Department: allied health sciences/ optometry
Reports To: head of department (HOD) - optpmetry / prinicipal

Job Summary

the physics faculty for b.sc optometry is responsible for delivering foundationall and applied physics coursework tailored to vision and optometric practice. the primary focus of this role is teaching concepts such as geometrical optics, physical optics, wave theory, light interaction and optical instrumentation to undergraduate students, ensuring they gain a strong scientific baseline for clinical optometry.

Key Responsibilities

1. Academic & Teaching Duties

Curriculum Delivery: Design, prepare, and deliver lectures on basic physics, geometrical optics, physical optics, and optical instrumentation in line with the university syllabus.

Practical Training: Conduct laboratory sessions demonstrating light refraction, reflection, lens power measurement, polarization, diffraction, and optical instruments (focimeter, spectrometer, lensometers).

Application to Optometry: Contextualize physical principles to clinical ophthalmic optics (e.g., lens design, aberrations, prism effects, lasers in eye care).

2. Student Evaluation & Assessment

Examinations: Prepare question papers, internal assessment test materials, assignments, and practical exam schemes.

Evaluation: Grade mid-term/annual exams, lab manuals, assignments,



and clinical physics presentations promptly.

Academic Monitoring: Identify academically weak or lagging students and conduct remedial classes or mentoring sessions to improve comprehension.

3. Course & Lab Management

Lab Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and safety protocols of optical physics laboratory equipment.

Resource Development: Develop teaching aids, lecture slides, clinical optics problem sets, and lab manuals tailored for allied health science students.

4. Institutional & Administrative Support

Required Qualifications & Experience

Educational Background

Master’s Degree (M.Sc): In Physics, Applied Physics, or Optics / Photonics from a recognized university.

Desirable: Ph.D. or NET/SLET qualification in Physics, or specialized exposure to Visual Optics / Biomedical Physics.

Teaching Experience

1–3 years of teaching experience at the undergraduate level (B.Sc Allied Health Sciences, Engineering, or Pure Sciences preferred).

Fresh postgraduates with solid academic credentials may also be considered.

Key Competencies & Skills

Subject Expertise: In-depth knowledge of geometrical optics, wave optics, light-matter interaction, and optical formulas.

Pedagogical Skills: Ability to explain abstract physical concepts using real-world medical and optometric applications.

Communication: Clear verbal and written English communication skills.

Patience & Mentorship: Approachability for guiding students from diverse academic backgrounds who may struggle with math-heavy physics topics.
