Consultant Cardiac Surgeon – Expatriate
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join and contribute to the development of a high-quality cardiac surgery service in a leading healthcare facility in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
The successful candidate will provide specialist cardiac surgical care for patients requiring complex cardiovascular surgical interventions and will be responsible for comprehensive patient management from preoperative assessment and surgical planning through surgery, postoperative care, and follow-up.
The Consultant will work closely with cardiologists, cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, intensivists, ICU teams, nurses, and other multidisciplinary professionals to deliver safe, evidence-based care and achieve excellent clinical outcomes.
This is an expatriate opportunity offering a senior clinical leadership role with significant scope to contribute to the establishment, development, and expansion of the cardiac surgery service.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate, diagnose, and assess patients requiring cardiac surgical intervention.
- Review clinical history, diagnostic investigations, imaging, and other relevant assessments to determine appropriate surgical treatment.
- Develop individualized surgical treatment plans based on clinical findings and multidisciplinary recommendations.
- Independently perform major cardiac surgical procedures, including:
- Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
- Cardiac valve repair and replacement surgery.
- Other appropriate open-heart and cardiovascular surgical procedures.
- Provide comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative surgical management.
- Manage complex cardiac surgical patients and respond appropriately to postoperative complications.
- Work closely with cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, cardiologists, intensivists, ICU teams, and perioperative nursing teams.
- Participate actively in multidisciplinary cardiac case discussions and treatment-planning meetings.
- Establish and implement evidence-based cardiac surgical protocols, clinical pathways, and standards of care.
- Contribute to the establishment, development, and expansion of the cardiac surgery service.
- Support the development of appropriate clinical systems, processes, surgical protocols, and operational standards.
- Supervise, train, and mentor junior surgeons, medical officers, residents, and other members of the surgical team.
- Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, peer reviews, research, teaching, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records and clinical documentation.
- Support institutional accreditation and compliance with applicable national and international healthcare standards.
- Promote patient safety, ethical medical practice, clinical governance, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with hospital leadership in developing the cardiac surgery program and improving clinical outcomes.
- Contribute to the recruitment, development, and capability-building of the cardiac surgical team where required.
Qualifications & Requirements
- MBBS, MD, or equivalent recognized medical degree.
- Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiac Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, or an internationally recognized equivalent specialist qualification.
- Current specialist registration and valid medical practising licence in the candidate's country of practice.
- Must be eligible to obtain the necessary registration and practising licence to work in Nigeria.
- Minimum of 7 years of post-specialization experience in cardiac surgery.
- Demonstrated experience independently performing major cardiac surgical procedures.
- Strong experience in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is essential.
- Strong experience in cardiac valve repair and/or replacement surgery is essential.
- Experience managing complex cardiac surgical cases and postoperative complications.
- Experience in establishing, developing, or expanding a cardiac surgery service will be an added advantage.
- Strong clinical leadership and decision-making capabilities.

Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with a strong track record in major cardiac surgery, particularly CABG and valve surgery, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary cardiovascular care workplace.
Candidates should demonstrate the clinical expertise, leadership capability, and professional maturity required to contribute to the establishment and growth of a high-performing cardiac surgery service.
Internationally trained and experienced cardiac surgeons with relevant qualifications and substantial clinical experience are encouraged to apply, subject to Nigerian medical registration and licensing requirements.
Compensation
Salary: Negotiable, based on qualifications, specialist experience, clinical expertise, and overall suitability for the role.
The expatriate package and other employment benefits will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.
Pay: From ₹13,656.22 per month
