ROLE MANDATE:
The Lead – Systems Integration owns the BESS as an integrated electrical and control system — how the product and its components behave together, and how that combined system behaves against the grid. Where Product Engineering owns the box, this role owns everything the box has to talk to.
The mandate has two halves. First, system and grid integration authority — governing the BMS / PCS / transformer / MV switchgear / EMS / SCADA / plant-controller interface stack, grid-code compliance, protection and controls philosophy, and all power-system studies up to the point of interconnection. Second, electrical design review authority — the technical sign-off gate for electrical design from the DC block onwards through AC collection, auxiliary power and the POI, whether the design originates in-house, from an EPC contractor or from a design consultant.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Grid Integration & Compliance
- Own grid-interconnection technical compliance — CEA connectivity and technical standards, IEGC / CERC regulations, state grid codes and RLDC / SLDC telemetry, metering and scheduling requirements
- Define and govern grid-support functional requirements — LVRT / HVRT ride-through, frequency response and FFR, active-power ramp control, reactive power and voltage regulation at POI, power-factor and Q-at-night capability
- Own the power-system study pack — load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, harmonic and power-quality (IEEE 519 / IEC 61000), insulation coordination, earthing and lightning protection, arc-flash, and EMT / dynamic grid-compliance simulation (PSCAD / PSS®E / ETAP / DIgSILENT)
- Own the plant-controller (PPC) functional specification and the set-point hierarchy between EMS, PPC and PCS — including mode arbitration, curtailment logic and hybrid / FDRE co-ordination with wind and solar
- Drive grid-compliance studies, connectivity approvals and utility clarifications on the tender and project critical path
System Integration Architecture (DC Block to POI)
- Own interface control documents (ICDs) across battery / BMS ↔ PCS ↔ MV transformer ↔ MV switchgear ↔ EMS / SCADA ↔ auxiliary supply, with clearly defined scope and responsibility boundaries
- Define DC-block electrical architecture — string / rack configuration, DC combiner and fusing, protection and isolation, insulation monitoring, and DC voltage-window matching to the selected PCS across the full SOC and temperature envelope
- Define AC-side architecture — PCS-to-transformer matching (rating, vector group, impedance, split / dual-winding configuration), MV collection topology, cable routing, losses and RTE build-up to the termination point
- Define auxiliary power architecture — HVAC, fire, lighting and controls loads, aux transformer sizing, emergency and grid-outage supply, and black-start / islanding behaviour
- Own the protection philosophy and relay setting basis at DC block, PCS, transformer, MV feeder and POI levels,
including neutral earthing and fault ride-through co-ordination
Electrical Design Review & Design Assurance
- Act as the review and sign-off authority for all electrical design deliverables — SLDs and key SLDs, protection and control schematics, cable schedules and sizing calculations, earthing and lightning layouts, load lists, equipment datasheets and layout drawings
- Run structured design gates (concept → basic → detailed → as-built) with published checklists, documented comments and tracked closure before release
- Review and approve or reject EPC, vendor and consultant drawings against Suzlon standards, tender specifications and applicable codes — holding the line on deviations
- Build and maintain the electrical design standards library — standard SLDs, design basis reports, cable-sizing and protection-setting templates and calculation formats — so repeat bids reuse a validated baseline
- Route every design change through engineering change control with Product Engineering; assess each change for safety, performance, warranty and compliance impact with no silent deviations
Controls, Interoperability & Commissioning Support
- Own communication architecture and protocol interoperability — Modbus TCP / RTU, IEC 61850, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104 and CAN — including network segregation, redundancy and baseline OT cyber-security requirements
- Define EMS / SCADA point lists, alarm philosophy, data-acquisition and metering requirements (ABT / special energy meters) for performance accounting and guarantee measurement
- Define integration test protocols — factory integration tests, pre-commissioning checks, energisation sequence, and grid-compliance and performance tests (capacity, RTE, response time, ride-through)
- Support first-time energisation, SAT and COD; close utility and Independent Engineer observations and resolve interface defects at site
- Feed commissioning learnings back into the reference architecture so recurring integration issues are designed out, not repeatedly fixed
Bid, Customer & Regulatory Support
- Provide integration, grid-compliance and electrical-design responses for SECI, NTPC, state-utility, FDRE and RTC tenders, and flag non-compliant or high-risk grid clauses before bid commitment
- Represent the electrical and grid design in customer technical reviews and lender / Independent Engineer due diligence
- Quantify technical risk in grid-related deviations and translate it into clear commercial and design implications for the Bid Desk and Commercial team
Field Feedback, Interfaces & Capability
- Lead root-cause analysis for integration and grid-related field events — trips,
protection maloperation, nuisance alarms, harmonic and power-quality excursions, and communication failures
- Maintain a reusable library of studies, interface documents and lessons learned so pursuit and execution cycle time falls with every project
- Build the systems-integration capability — mentor engineers, define competency standards and develop bench strength for multi-project execution
SUCCESS MEASURES
- Grid compliance: Grid-code and CEA compliance demonstrated; studies accepted by CTU / STU and Independent Engineers without rework cycles
- Design assurance: All electrical deliverables reviewed and signed off at defined gates; comment closure on schedule with zero uncontrolled deviations
- Interoperability: BMS / PCS / EMS / transformer interfaces integrated first-time-right; site integration defects trending down project over project
- Commissioning: Energisation, grid-compliance and performance tests cleared on first attempt; SAT / COD milestones protected
- Standardisation: Standard SLD and design-basis library published and actively reused across bids and projects
- Field reliability: Integration and grid-related field events reduced; RCA closure within defined timelines with verified effectiveness
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Experience & Background
- 5+ years (Atleast 1 year in BESS) in grid-connected electrical system design and integration — BESS, utility-scale solar / wind, HV substations or power-electronics-intensive plants.
- Demonstrated design-review and sign-off authority (not purely drafting or execution), with the ability to hold technical positions against EPC and vendor pressure
- Hands-on track record of taking a grid-connected plant from SLD through energisation, grid-compliance testing and COD
- Direct exposure to Indian grid approvals and utility interaction — CTU / STU connectivity, RLDC / SLDC coordination and CEA compliance
- Experience owning multi-vendor interfaces where PCS, EMS, transformer and battery scopes sit with different suppliers
Domain Expertise
- Solid command of power-system studies and modelling tools (PSCAD, PSS®E, ETAP, DIgSILENT) and the ability to interrogate a consultant's study rather than merely receive it
- Deep working knowledge of PCS / inverter behaviour, transformer selection and MV switchgear, protection schemes and relay settings
- Practical understanding of containerized BESS architecture and the BMS / PCS / EMS / PPC control hierarchy, including protocol-level interoperability
- Working command of applicable standards — CEA Technical Standards for Connectivity, IEGC, IEEE 519, IEC 61850, IEC 62933, IS / IEC standards for transformers and switchgear, and fire and safety codes
- Familiarity with performance-guarantee mechanics (RTE, availability, response time) and how electrical design choices drive guarantee exposure
Education
- B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical or Electrical & Electronics Engineering
- M.Tech in Power Systems or Power Electronics preferred;
