Holidays are supposed to be the reward at the end of a brutal compliance season. So why do so many accountants come back from them more tired than when they left? In this episode Nat and Sarah compare mid-year breaks, argue about whether the laptop belongs in the suitcase, and share what actually works when you have zero self-control. Then it's into a big announcement and one of the most packed industry updates of the year.

The Mid-Year Break Debate

Both hosts took a break, and both did it differently. The honest confession up front is that neither of them fully switched off - and that's the real conversation. For firm owners, "annual leave" often means the same workload compressed either side of the trip, plus a phone that keeps buzzing with client questions that only you can answer.

Nat and Sarah dig into why that happens. It isn't laziness or bad boundaries; it's structural. When you are the technical bottleneck, the review point, and the relationship owner, stepping away creates a queue.

The fix isn't willpower - it's designing the practice so someone else can genuinely hold the fort. That means documented workflows, a second reviewer, and a client base that has been trained on how your firm communicates.

Should the Laptop Come on Holiday?

The classic split: one host packs it, one host swears she won't (and then does). Rather than pretending purity is achievable, they land on a practical middle ground. If the laptop comes, it comes with rules - a defined window each day, a short list of what qualifies as urgent, and a hard close after that. Uncontrolled access is what turns a two-week break into two weeks of low-grade work anxiety.

The alternative approach is the full disconnect, which requires more preparation than most people give it: an out-of-office that actually says who to contact, deadlines moved ahead of the break rather than into it, and a team briefing that covers the top ten likely client issues.
