Why we need this role
The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical leadership for the engineering, integration, transformation and lifecycle management of Colt's global carrier-grade IP/MPLS backbone infrastructure. The role will lead complex platform modernisation, multi-vendor network integration, operational handover and backbone transformation programmes, enabling the evolution of Colt's next-generation transport network.
Working closely with Architecture, Product, Operations, Security and Automation teams, you will deliver resilient, scalable and highly automated network solutions across Juniper, Nokia and Cisco service provider platforms while driving engineering standards and technical excellence.

What you will do
- Lead engineering activities for carrier-class routing platforms including platform introduction, software qualification, hardware validation, production certification and lifecycle management.
- Design, implement and optimise large-scale carrier-grade IP/MPLS backbone infrastructure across multi-vendor service provider environments.
- Lead strategic network integration, operational handover, network separation, backbone consolidation and infrastructure transformation programmes.
- Design and implement Network-to-Network Interface (NNI) solutions supporting multi-AS carrier interconnectivity and service interoperability.
- Develop engineering methodologies for large-scale Autonomous System (ASN) renumbering, routing-domain migration, service migration and backbone optimisation while maintaining customer service continuity.
- Lead platform refresh, software lifecycle management, feature qualification, interoperability testing, regression testing and production deployment.
- Drive engineering automation, Digital Twin validation, production readiness and AI-assisted operational capabilities.
- Produce High-Level Designs (HLD), Low-Level Designs (LLD), engineering standards, migration plans, implementation procedures, operational runbooks and acceptance test documentation.
- Collaborate with global Engineering, Architecture, Product, Operations and Vendor teams to deliver strategic technology transformation initiatives.
What we're looking for
Carrier Backbone Engineering
- Proven experience designing, implementing and operating large-scale Tier-1 or Tier-2 carrier-grade IP/MPLS backbone networks.
- Demonstrated experience delivering complex network integration, operational handover, backbone consolidation, infrastructure transformation and network modernisation programmes.
- Proven experience planning and executing large-scale Autonomous System (ASN) renumbering, routing-domain migration, routing-policy harmonisation and backbone optimisation within production service provider environments.
- Strong understanding and practical implementation experience of Inter-AS Option A, Option B and Option C, including Network-to-Network Interface (NNI) design, deployment and troubleshooting for multi-AS carrier networks.
Routing & MPLS
- Expert knowledge of IS-IS (including Multi-Instance IS-IS), OSPF, iBGP, eBGP, Route Reflectors, MPLS, RSVP-TE, LDP, BGP-LU, BGP-LS and advanced routing-policy engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience with Segment Routing technologies including SR-MPLS, SRv6, Prefix-SID, Adjacency-SID, TI-LFA, Remote LFA, Flex-Algo, SR Policy, BGP Color and Segment Routing Traffic Engineering.
- Extensive knowledge of MPLS services including L2VPN, L3VPN, EVPN, EVPN-VPWS, EVPN-ELAN, VPLS, Carrier Supporting Carrier (CsC), Seamless MPLS and EVPN Multihoming.
- Robust knowledge of native IP Multicast technologies including PIM-SM, PIM-SSM, Anycast RP, MSDP, MVPN, NG-MVPN and EVPN Multicast.
- Strong understanding of QoS architecture including classification, policing, shaping, scheduling, Hierarchical QoS and end-to-end traffic engineering.
Platform Engineering
- Expert-level experience with Juniper service provider platforms including MX Series, MX304, PTX Series, EX/QFX and Junos OS.
- Deep understanding of Juniper platform internals including Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE), Trio architecture, Routing Engine (RE), FPC/MIC architecture, forwarding pipeline, FIB programming, ECMP behaviour, forwarding performance optimisation and packet-forwarding analysis.
- Working knowledge of Nokia SR OS and Cisco IOS-XR carrier platforms within multi-vendor production environments.
- Proven experience in platform introduction, hardware qualification, software lifecycle management, ISSU, interoperability validation, regression testing, scalability testing and production certification.
Internet & Core Services
- Strong understanding of carrier Internet architecture including Internet Transit, IX Peering, CDN Interconnect, Cloud Connectivity and Internet Edge services.
- Experience with DDoS mitigation platforms, Flow Spec, RPKI, Route Origin Validation (ROV), RTBH and Internet routing security.
- Experience with carrier-grade DNS infrastructure, DHCP, IP Address Management (IPAM), NTP, Net Flow, IPFIX, streaming telemetry, SNMP and network observability solutions.
Automation & AI
- Strong hands-on experience with Python, Ansible, Git, Jinja2, Robot Framework, Rundeck, Itential, NETCONF, RESTCONF, gNMI, Open Config, YANG and infrastructure-as-code methodologies.
- Experience developing production automation, compliance validation, configuration generation, network health checks, automated testing and CI/CD deployment pipelines.
- Exposure to AI-assisted Network Operations (AIOps), intent-based networking, Digital Twin laboratories, predictive analytics and autonomous network validation.
